Welcome To Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club - Newport

Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club (Newport, S. Wales) was established in 2004 with the aim of teaching traditional Shotokan karate to the highest standards. To this end the club is affiliated to the Welsh Traditional Karate Federation (WTKF) which has Sensei Masao Kawasoe (8th Dan) as Association Head. We also attend courses with other world class instructors such as Dave Hazard, Wayne Otto OBE, Jon Mottram etc. In addition we integrate concepts from other martial arts such as Kyusho-Jutsu (pressure point striking) as taught by Professor Rick Clark, to ensure that emphasis is placed on realistic self-defence. Club members compete regularly in regional competitions, with many individuals ranked high in league tables.

The club currently has around 70 members ranging from beginner to black belt. Younger children, aged 5 -7 participate in the Tiny Tigers Club whilst older students join the main club. We recognize the existing grade of all new members regardless of previous affiliation or style.

BSKC is affiliated to the Welsh Karate Governing Body and consequently adheres to all their codes of practice, guaranteeing that instructors have up to date coaching qualifications and insurance. All instructors have gained certification in 'Safeguarding & Protecting Children' and 'First Aid' and are CRB checked and carry full indemnity insurance.

We are an open and friendly club and have fostered close relations with instructors in Wales, UK, USA and Bahrain. On behalf of the instructors at BSKC we thank you for your interest and hope you enjoy browsing the rest of the site. We also extend an invitation to visit the club and watch, chat or take part. You can get in touch using the contact details at the foot of this page. The video clips below feature samples of lessons and an interview with the club's Chief Instructor.

Yours in karate-do,

Sensei Mark Kupsz (BSKC Chief Instructor)
