Welcome To Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club - Newport
Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club (Newport, S. Wales) was established in 2004 with the aim of teaching traditional Shotokan karate to the highest standards. To this end the club is affiliated to the Welsh Traditional Karate Federation (WTKF) which has Sensei Masao Kawasoe (8th Dan) as Association Head. We also attend and hold courses with other experienced martial artists such as Professor Rick Clark, Dave Hazard and Harry Cook. In addition we integrate concepts from other martial arts such as Kyusho-Jutsu (pressure point striking) to ensure that emphasis is placed on realistic self-defence. The club also takes part in competitive events at a national level.
The club currently has over 90 members ranging from beginners to black belt. Younger children, aged 5 -7 participate in the Tiny Tigers Club whilst older students join the main club. We recognize the existing grade of all new members regardless of previous affiliation or style.
BSKC is affiliated to the Welsh Karate Governing Body and consequently adheres to all their codes of practice, guaranteeing that instructors have relevant coaching and first aid certification as well as personal indemnity insurance. The club actively promotes child safety and all instructors have gained qualification in the safeguarding and protection of children and hold current CRB disclosures.
We are an open and friendly club and have fostered close relations with instructors in Wales, UK and USA. On behalf of the instructors at BSKC we thank you for your interest and hope you enjoy browsing the rest of the site. We also extend an invitation to visit the club to chat, watch or take part. You can get in touch using the contact details at the foot of this page. The video clip below features samples of lessons and an interview with the club's Chief Instructor.
Yours in karate-do,
Sensei Mark Kupsz (BSKC Chief Instructor)
