Competitions

Welcome to the page where we celebrate individual and club achievements. BSKC is committed to the development of karateka as good all-rounders, being able to compete at a level equal to or better than the best clubs in Wales. To this end we spend a good percentage of class time concentrating specifically on the skills and tactics required to produce champions in both kata and kumite. Students are encouraged to attend courses at other clubs and with visiting instructors many of who coach at a National level. Including the likes of Wayne Otto (England National Coach), Dave Hazard (British Team Captain), Jon Mottram (European Kata Champion) and others.

We are regularly invited to attend tournaments all over the UK but tend to restrict entry to events in South Wales; primarily those organized by the Welsh Karate League. We also participate annually in our own association competitions i.e. WTKF Championships held in Bangor and the UKTKF Championships in Blackpool.

The Welsh Karate League

For the past year BSKC has been taking part in regional competitions organized by the Welsh Karate League. The WKL. was formed by several of Wales’ most experienced and respected instructors, in a mutual desire to give Wales' young competitors a platform to develop their talents.

WKL. comprises a series of tournaments, held at monthly intervals throughout the year. Its aims are to give youngsters a chance to compete in a friendly but competitive and professionally run environment, to make new friends and to develop the experience and skills to go on and find success at Wales’ premier events such as the WKGB Championships and beyond.

As well as delivering quality competitions, the league format gives the competitors both short-term and longer-term challenges akin to mainstream sports. We have already witnessed impressive development from youngsters who are taking the opportunity to compete at prestigious events around South Wales and we are proud to be a part of this venture.

I hope that my students strive for excellence, emulate the achievements of their peers, and set new targets for those that follow in their path.

Our Commitment To Success

We have a growing squad of dedicated competitors who regularly attend all regional events. We are starting to dominate the league tables and have had many successes in both kata and kumite. We are currently ranked 5th from 20 clubs that take part in the WKL and have had many podium positions in WKL, WKGB and UKTKF events. Several of our students occupy the top 3 places in their individual events within the WKL and several have won or come close to wi nning their event category outright earning the title “Champion of Champions”

Regular competition attendance requires both dedication to training and financial commitment. To this end BSKC is prepared to subsidize the cost of entry to all competitions and courses by 50%. It is hoped that this will alleviate some of the financial burden so that money is not a factor that prevents taking part. Last year we raised £1500 for the 'club fund' and offered subsidies to over 200 entries. The only thing we ask in return is that students adopt a serious attitude to training and do their best to take part regularly. The benefits to the individual are tremendous with many of our students gaining big progressions in skill and technique as well as embracing good sportsmanship and becoming richer, more confident persons. We realize that not all students have strong competitive natures but we would encourage them all to at least give it a go. As an old chinese proverb says:

“To compete and win is to succeed

To compete and lose is to learn

To not compete accomplishes nothing”
