Licence Application & Renewal
The following people are required to either purchase or renew their licences: Karl Lewis, Ben Harrington, David Reeves, Connor Morris, Mike O’Neill, Daniel Payne. Cost of a new licence and record book is £18.50. Renewal fee is £15. Please make payment immediately.
Competition News
Seems the weather put paid to the Maesteg Competition. Word from the WKL secretary is that this will not be rescheduled at a later date so that leaves just the WKL Grand Final which is to be held in Penarth on 11th March. Finals points count towards the point totals. Awards are presented to the top 3 competitors in each event based on the total number of points accumulated throughout the year. We need a good turnout to ensure we regain our 5th place club position. The League begins anew on April 15th.
Important tournaments coming up are the UKTKF Championships in Blackpool on March 17th and the WTKF Championships in Caernarfon on 21st April. I will be sending out details and sign-up sheets for these events very soon as I will need to make arrangements for travel and accommodation based on demand. It is hoped that club members will fully support these events, especially the WTKF Peter Hughes Memorial Competition, where I would like to see everyone aged 5 – 15 participating.
Fund Raising
The club fund has run dry and we now have 2 alternatives. Carry out more fund raising activities or scrap the subsidy of competitions and courses. Personally I feel that we should continue funding events and support our students’ efforts to compete and develop their karate. It is my intention to raise funds through various initiatives the first of which is the offer of a photo service similar to that offered at school. I will take ‘action’ pictures in class and then offer these for sale. You will have a choice of picture and sizes and all money will go towards the club fund. Each pack is the same price at just £5. All photos will be printed with borders on quality gloss photo paper. Photos are a great memento and their sale will raise much needed cash for the club fund. I will do my best to provide great pictures that you and your family will treasure for years to come. If everyone makes just one purchase we could easily raise over £200!!
Print options
If you would like any of the A5 or A4 pictures framed I am happy to oblige and can even add text. Please sign up on the order sheet with student name and I can then target those individuals for pictures. Once I have a few pictures you can view these in class and make your selection, size options etc.
ETKF Course
The next brown and black belt course will be held at Windsor Leisure Centre on Sun 12th February 12:30 pm. Cost is £5 per person (inclusive of 50% discount). Let me know if you need a lift.

If you haven’t visited the BSKC web site of late why not take a look. Lots of new pictures and features, including new pages ‘Video links’, ‘Competition News’ and ‘Student Awards’.
Student Of the Month Award
This month the award goes to Marlon Clarke and Mathew Wall. The lads have demonstrated their commitment to training hard in 2012 by missing only one training session in the whole of January. I hope that others will follow their lead.
Dave Hazard Course
I’m a great believer that when it comes to karate you can never have enough knowledge. Sensei Dave Hazard (8th Dan) has a remarkable understanding of technique and application that he is willing to share. Take your pick of Sat 24th or Sun 25th March at Bridgend Leisure Centre. Price is £10 per session.
Payment by Standing Order
Standing Order payment has proved popular with several members. If you would like to make future payments by direct debit ask me for a form. It’s quick and easy; you fill in the form I do all the rest.

Grading Exam
Congratulations to everyone who took their grading exam in December. Everyone looked really good on the day and we had 100% pass rate. If you would like a copy of the grading on DVD I can do this for just £2. As a reminder here are the attendance figures required to be eligible for the next grading in early April.
UKTKF Windsor Course
Sensei Kawasoe asked that all UKTKF courses be fully supported by brown and black belts. Each course is a master class in technique and cannot help but improve your knowledge and understanding. The next Windsor course is in February 2012.
Fees Increase in 2012
Note that the fees for unlimited training are now £40 per month. Fees for once-weekly training will remain unchanged at £20 per month. The reasons for this are twofold a) to offset the extra cost of venue hire b) to reduce the disparity in lesson cost between these two payment options. Please note that even after this increase the cost per lesson is still lower than the £4.50 I use to charge, providing that you attend 9 or more lessons in the month. Those people who pay by standing order should pay the extra £10 for January and complete a new form for the bank. I look forward to your support and continued attendance in 2012.

Alas we did not send any competitors to the last WKL comp in Wrexham. The reasons being that a) it was too far away and b) it clashed with the UKTKF Course in Windsor. Consequently our overall ranking dropped from 5th to 6th and several people have moved out of contention for awards at the Champion of Champions tournament. It is vitally important that we field a strong team at the remaining 2 events of 2012. Please support the club and help us regain our placings. The next event is on 5th February 2012 in Maesteg. Advertising
I am getting a large quantity of leaflets printed for distribution in the New Year. The idea is to blitz all the homes in and around the Fitness4Less area in the hope of recruiting new students. I will be asking for volunteers willing to give up a few hours in early January to help distribute them with me.
Club Web Site
I have been busy adding to the site over the last few weeks. Most pages have new or additional features and we are taking lots of photos for the gallery to replace the outdated ones. We have 2 new pages for Student Awards and Competitions that will be updated each month. I’ve also added links to new video clips of Sensei Kawasoe on YouTube. This is still work in progress so keep checking. David Lloyd has volunteered to redo the site in 2012 and in the process we will be improving how the site looks and making it more interactive with links to student profiles, new videos and more. Grading Exam
Sensei Kawasoe will be with us on the 5th December. We will be holding the grading at Maindee Primary School. Starting 6pm, we should be finished by 9pm at latest. Please bring in grading and training fees this week along with record books. The expectation is that all club members should attend the pre-grading training. Cost is £12.50 for training and an additional £12.50 for the grading exam.
Xmas Holidays
The club will hold its last training session of 2011 on Fri 21st Dec. The club will then be closed for the Xmas holidays, recommencing Wed 4th January. Accordingly the training fees for December are reduced to £20 for unlimited training and £13 for once-weekly. I will refund money to anyone who pays by standing order.
Class Cancellation
There will be no training on Weds 7th Dec. Sorry but Jake and myself have to attend a Child Safety & Protection course in Cardiff and this was the only night I could book.
Club Relocation and Schedule
Many thanks for everyone’s support regarding the change of venue. Most people seem happy with the move to F4L, with the obvious advantages that we have bigger premises with better facilities. I am keen to hear your views no matter what. Please take a minute to send an email or post on our Facebook page, especially if you have any concerns.

I will be giving out end of year awards at the last training session of the year. This will be on 21st December. We will train for an hour, followed by the awards and some refreshments.
Adult Xmas Dinner
All adult members and parents are invited to attend the BSKC Xmas Dinner. I’ve booked Thursday 15th December at Peachy Keens (Bridge Street) as they have food to cater for every taste and are reasonably priced. Meet at the Queens Hotel (opposite) at 7:00pm for drinks. Meal at 8:30pm. RSPV so I know numbers.

Car Boot Sale
Vicky managed to raise a further £37 towards club funds with a car boot sale last month. The club is extremely grateful for the time and effort put into this. No doubt Vicky will be doing a few more in the New Year. Please bring in any unwanted Xmas gifts, old toys, games, DVD’s etc and we will look after them until we have enough to warrant another sale.

Seasons Wishes
Finally I’d like to thank all members and parents for your support throughout 2012. This was our best year ever with lots of new initiatives and many successes. 2012 will see us grow even stronger as we start the WKL afresh and hopefully by the years end we will have several new black belts from amongst our juniors. There’s lots lined up for 2012 including UKTKF course in Feb, course with Sensei Dave Hazard & UKTKF Championships in March. WTKF Championships in April etc. I hope you will all want to be part of our success in 2012. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Club Focus & Direction Meeting
Many thanks to all who attended the meeting. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated and will act as a springboard for new initiatives and improved service.
Club Relocation and Schedule
After a considerable amount of effort and taking onboard members wishes I have managed to locate new premises for BSKC. From the 18th November the new training schedule will be: Tiny Tigers Club: Monday & Friday. 5:00 – 6:00pm Fitness4Less, (Corporation Rd). Karate Club: Wednesday. 6:30 – 8:00pm, Everybody’s Gym, (Wern Trading Estate) Friday & Sunday 6:00 – 8:50pm Fitness4Less. I would have liked to retain our Monday night slot but I couldn’t find anywhere that could offer us a block of 3 hours. So I went with the next best option of moving the class to Sunday as this allows us to keep most of our training in one venue and at similar times. The upside is that we have a super new base with storage facilities, bigger floor area, air conditioning, nicer changing rooms with showers and we are a lot more visible to potential newcomers. Many thanks to Mark Wall, Chris Hopkins, Mark Jones, Nigel James and Dave Lloyd for their help in moving our gear across. I hope everyone continues to show their support for the club by attending regularly. Feel free to provide feedback regarding these changes as they impact on you.
Competition News
Well done to all who participated in the WKL comp in Briton Ferry. Jessica earned silver in kata. Karish, Markus and Caitlin got bronze medals. Special congratulations go to gabriella Conti. Gabriella entered both kata and kumite and despite taking a few knocks got a bronze medal in her first ever competition.The next WKL event is on Sunday 27th in Wrexham. I will be unable to attend as I will be on the UKTKF course in Windsor. See me soon if you intend to take part.
Upcoming Courses
The next UKTKF course is on Sunday 27th November at the Windsor Leisure Centre. 12 – 2pm. The course is open to all students graded purple belt and above. Brown belt attendance is encouraged for all. Cost is £5 per head after subsidy. See me if you require a lift to and from the event.
Training Attendance & Grading Exam
The next grading exam is about 3 weeks away, I encourage everyone to check their training attendance and take advantage of the remaining lessons to avoid the disappointment of not being eligible. I should know the date Sensei can come in the next week or two. I will notify all as soon as I receive news. All club members are expected to attend the training session with Sensei Kawasoe. Cost is £12.50 for training and an additional £12.50 for those taking the grading exam. Payment should be made over the next 2 weeks.
Fireworks Party
Thanks to everyone who attended this event. I hope you enjoyed the fireworks, food etc. We managed to raise £50 from the raffle, which will go towards building up the club fund again.
Student Of The Month
This month I have pleasure in awarding SOM to David Lloyd. David trains regularly and has made excellent progress in his transition from Wado-ryu to Shotokan. David is actively involved with the running of the club and well deserves this recognition.
Xmas Parties
It was agreed at the F&D meeting that we have an end of year awards ceremony that we will combine with refreshments. I’d also like to have an adult Xmas party. Can I suggest Peachy Keens as a venue as they have food to cater for every taste and are reasonably priced. Suggested date Thursday 15th December.
Car Boot Sale
Vicky would like to do another car boot sale to raise funds for the club. Games, toys, DVDs are particularly welcome. Please bring in any unwanted clutter to Burleigh before we move. Thanks.

Burleigh Academy Closing
Due to high running costs Sarah and Graham have sold Burleigh Academy. The new owners have plans for the ballet suite and have asked us to move out by 18th November. I had no say in this matter and so sadly we will have to relocate. I will do my best to find a suitable venue as close as I can and ask that everyone supports the club by staying with us.
Club Focus & Direction Meeting

Competition News
Well done to all who participated in the WKL comp in Swansea. 13 entries and 7 medals. Markus and Daniel got silver in kumite and kata. Jessica got a gold in kata and a bronze in kumite. Jamie, Kae & Caitlin got bronze in kumite. We could have come away with more as several fights went to extra time and were lost on decision. Connor was ahead with 5 secs to spare and lost on a final punch and Daniel was ahead in kata until he hesitated on the last move..... DOH!! Next comp is in Cowbridge on 9th Oct.10 people took part in the WKL Cowbridge. Daniel, Jessica and Markus got silver medals and Jamie, Caitlin and Marlon came away with bronze medals. It goes without saying that I am extremely proud of all our achievements to date especially as this is our first season of regular competition and we are dominating events even with very small numbers. I would encourage those who have not yet had a go at competitions to have a go. The next WKL event is in Briton Ferry (about 50 miles away) on Sun. 6th November. Anyone who wants to car pool should see me.

Thanks to Daniel, Tyne and Caitlin for attending the kata course with Jon Mottram last month. I think all will agree that he was very impressive. The next kumite development course with Gareth Reynolds is on 22nd Oct at the YMCA Hub, Barry (rugby permitting). Wayne Otto (OBE), the current National Coach for England will be holding a seminar at Vale karate club on Sat 5th November. I would encourage all those who are keen to improve their competition skills to attend some or all of these courses as these instructors really know their stuff. BSKC will pay 50% of the course fee.

Fireworks Party
Chris has kindly allowed us to use the Manor Hotel grounds for the display on Sunday 6th Nov at 6:30pm. We will be providing food and soft beverages and hopefully will be able to put on a decent 30 min display. Cost is £5 for individuals and £10 for a family group. We will also be holding a raffle to help raise money for the club fund, any donations gratefully accepted. Please try to support this event as I need a decent turnout to recoup expenses.
Student Of The Month
This month I have pleasure in awarding SOM to Connor Morris. Connor is a regular on the competition circuit and has been helping out with beginners. He has a great attitude to training and always gives his best. As a result he has achieved a good understanding of karate technique.

SKM Article
Club members might be interested to know that my long time friend Joseph Claycomb recently received his 5th Dan. Not bad for someone who started as one of my students back in the 80's. Joseph has had an article published in Shotokan Karate Magazine. I'll run off some copies for peeps to read. Competition News
Daniel Williams and Chris Hopkins competed in the WKGB Welsh Open Championships. This was a high level event with squads from Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales taking part. There were some truly outstanding performances from many experienced competitors. Chris and Daniel were not out of place but both took early retirements in their events. Many thanks to Sally-Ann for coming to support their efforts.
The next WKL event is on September 11th at Swansea University. Please sign up on the club notice board or mail me entries ASAP.
Upcoming Courses
Vale karate club (YMCA Hub, Barry) are hosting a number of courses in the next few months. The first is a kumite development seminar on 10th September 9-11am with Gareth Reynolds. Gareth is a member of the Wales National Squad. On the 25th September there is a kata clinic with Jon Mottram. Jon is many times British Kata Champion. Finally, Wayne Otto (OBE), the current National Coach for England will be holding a seminar in November. I would encourage all those who are keen to improve their competition skills to attend some or all of these courses as these instructors really know their stuff. BSKC will pay 50% of the course fee.

Student Of The Month
This month I have pleasure in awarding SOM to Ken Evans. Ken has been a staunch supporter of club events. He has a great attitude to training and always gives his best. As a result he is making excellent progress in many aspects of his karate.

Student Recruitment
The club still needs more students. It has been a while since we had new recruits, especially adults. We currently have 80 members on the roll but I would like this figure to reach 100 by the end of the year. Please do all you can to bring in new members and earn yourself some cash in the process. Well done to Mark Jones for collecting a 'tenner' for his efforts.

Grading Exam
Congratulations to everyone who gained their belt promotion. The standard of karate at Burleigh is tremendous and you should all be proud of your achievements. I am sorry that not everyone attended enough lessons to be eligible to take the exam. I will carry forward lesson totals for those individuals. Those who passed start at zero again. As a reminder here are the number of lessons required to be eligible to attempt the next grading. Please do your best to reach these targets to avoid missing out.
Those who undertook the grading will receive their WTKF pass certificate, grading report and kata progress certificates at the next class they attend. Please focus on the comments written on the report when you train in class. I‘ve tried to highlight the main areas you need to work on to ensure your karate develops to the next level. Sorry but the video we shot of the grading has come out with a strange hue due to the hall lighting but It’s fine to watch in black and white. If you would like a copy I can put it on a CD for £1. Ask at club.
Competition News
July was a busy month with BSKC students competing in both WKL and WKGB events. The number of students taking part is growing each month, as is our reputation for being a strong club with many good competitors. Considering we only do a minimum of competition training it is testament to how strong our basic techniques are. Of the 14 people who took part in Penarth we came away with 2 silver and 6 bronze. Both Karish and Ibrahim showed lots of courage in the kumite, both carrying on after taking a knock. Karish is now ranked 1st place in his kumite division. Dylan Daniels currently lies 2nd in both kata and kumite divisions. We also have several competitors contending top positions. It would be great to see some of our adult members taking part in either kata or kumite.
The WKGB competitions remain tough with only the elite from most clubs taking part. Many of our competitors got through preliminary rounds only to be beaten in subsequent ones by seasoned competitors with good pedigrees. Daniel Williams had the best result of the day placing 2nd to Bradley Christoforato. Bradley is a regular champion in UK events and a fine kata technician but Daniel has him in his sights and is looking forward to their next encounter.
There is no WKL competition in August but for those wanting to take part, the next WKGB event is the Welsh Open Championship on Sunday 28th August. I will post entry forms on the notice board soon .
Burleigh Awards Presentation
Thanks to Daniel Williams and Jamie Limburn for cutting their WKGB competition short and helping with the demonstration on the day. You did a great job and it was well received. BSKC used this opportunity to celebrate the successes of its competition champions for the period July 2010/2011. Trophies were awarded to the top 3 competitors. Awards were made on the basis of the number of events entered and overall success. Caitlin Morrison received 3rd place, Dylan Daniels 2nd and Daniel Williams 1st. Congratulations to all; it will be a tough battle next year as we have many talented students in with a chance of winning these prestigious awards
Kumite Courses
Many thanks go to Mark, Mathew Jamie, Caitlin & Daniel for attending the Vale kumite development and WKL seminar. I think all will agree that there were lots of great ideas and high-class instruction. I will keep people informed of other such events.

Fund Raising
Our current rate of competition entry means that we need about £150 each month to subsidize entries. Vicky is doing another car boot sale this month. In addition we are offering you the chance to win cash with our “Soccercard” game. Pick your favourite team and if it matches the one selected you win £20. There’s a 1:40 chance of winning for a £1 stake. The club gets £20 for each card completed. Maybe you could take a card into work to help out. I have written to Tesco asking if we can help with ‘bagging’ at the checkouts to help raise more cash. Congratulations go to Sally-Ann for winning the July Soccercard. Sally-Ann very kindly donated her winnings back to the club fund. Many thanks also to Sensei Omar who donated £30 to the fund in support of our competitors. Karate Summer School
The plans I had for karate summer school have been dropped as I didn’t get sufficient numbers. I apologize to those who wanted to take part. Maybe next year the uptake will be better.Summer BBQ
All club members and family are invited to The Manor Hotel (Stow Hill) on Sunday 7th August at 4pm. The club will provide BBQ food and soft drinks. There is no charge but we ask that you bring a small dish of pasta, rice, salad or dip and any alcoholic drinks you fancy. The hotel has a large garden that we can use to play games (some wetter than others) and I will provide music. Please let me know by email if you will be coming, with numbers so I know how much stuff to buy in. If it’s raining on the day assume it’s off until further notice.
Goju-Ryu Seminar
I have been talking with Michael Hollingberry a Goju-ryu instructor from the London area for about a year and I am pleased to announce that he is coming over to pay me a visit. Whilst he is here I have asked him to come over to the club and give us a taste of this unique style of karate. Mike received his 5th Dan in Japan and is a dedicated and passionate instructor. Goju- ryu karate is a strong, hard style, having its origins on the island of Okinawa, off the coast of Japan and undoubtedly influenced the origins of Shotokan karate, being the older of the 2 styles. With its emphasis on practical no-nonsense applications it is the epitome of ‘budo’ (fighting spirit). Mike should be over in late August and I encourage everyone to come along and give it a try. Fun and games assured.
Student Of The Month
This month I have the pleasure in awarding SOM to Neil Elliott. Neil has been taking his karate seriously since joining the club; mixing regular training with private lessons. As a result he has reached a high standard for his grade and well deserves the recognition.
Karate Suits
I note that some of our longer serving members are growing out of their original uniform. I have poly-cotton suits that are shrink resistant in all sizes starting at just £15. A few of our more serious students have asked about obtaining quality suits for training and competition purpose. A good suit is a mix of style and durability. Made from heavier fabric with multi-row stitching these suits behave and sound different to the cheaper lighter ones. They hold their shape and add snap to technique. There are many suppliers of the top end suits but most come with a top end price of £130 or more. For the last 6 months I have been wearing the Blitz White Diamond suit and it feels great. Light but strong. The jacket has the longer Japanese cut, reducing the tendency to ride up. In addition it comes with 2 pairs of bottoms, a wider shorter pair for kata and a longer pair for kumite. I now much prefer this to my more expensive Tokaido suit. If you look on the Blitz website you will see that these retail between £66 - £84 plus £7 postage. I can offer these at £45 to anyone who is interested. The suits size starts at 3 and increases in half-sizes up to 8. If you want a quality suit, guaranteed not to shrink, that will last 5 – 10 years then look no further. Email me with size and you can collect in 7 days or less.

Summer Training Schedule & Training Fee Refunds
Lesson times will remain unchanged for the summer period. Please remember that monthly fees are reduced if you take 2 weeks or more off from the club for a legitimate reason such as sickness, injury, holidays etc. Please mention any absence when payment is due and I will reduce the fee accordingly. Those who pay by standing order will be refunded in cash on request. Tiny Tiger classes will be reduced to one class per week (Monday) for the duration of the summer holiday.
Advanced Class
A reminder that students graded purple belt and above should try and make the advanced class on Mon. AND Fri at 7:35pm. If for any reason you cannot make these classes I’d rather you attend the earlier class rather than missing out. Any ADULT green belt wanting to attend this class is welcome to do so. This will free space in the earlier class and allow you access to higher-level training in preparation for competitions etc.

Club Focus and Direction Meeting

Club Funds
The matter of how we should spend club funds was discussed at the F&D meeting and the majority feeling was that we should aim to make funds available to as many as possible. Providing we have sufficient funds cash will be available for the following:

Fund Raising
Many thanks to Vicky Williams for car booting last month. She raised another £86 for the club fund. Vicky is happy to do another in August if she has enough things to sell. If you have any unwanted items in reasonable condition please bring them along to the club. Toys DVDs and games are particularly welcome. In addition we are offering you the chance to win cash with our “Soccercard” game. Pick your favourite team and if it matches the one selected you grab £20. There’s a 1:40 chance of winning for a £1 stake. The club gets £20 for each card completed.
Competition News
The competition in Llanelli was attended by 11 students who collectively brought home 10 bronze, 1 silver and 2 gold medals. This currently places us 5th out of 15 clubs. We also rank highly in several individual events including Dylan Daniels who lies 2nd in both kata and kumite, Daniel Williams J.1st kumite and 3rd kata, Jessica Watkins 2nd kata and J.6th kumite, Caitlin Morrison J.3rd kata and J.6th kumite and Jay Coles J.4th Kata and J.8th kumite. The next WKL competition is being held at Cogan Sports Centre 17th July. 50% of the entry fee will be paid by BSKC so why not come along, have fun and support the club. The WKGB host the Welsh Junior Championships on Sun. 24th July at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, starting 9am. Sign up on the club notice board as usual.
Upcoming Kumite Courses
I have been contacted by Vale Karate Club regarding kumite training for competitions. There will be a session on July 2nd 9 -11am at the YMCA Hub, Barry. BSKC members are welcome to come along. £5 for the session. The WKL are also offering a 3 hour free-style seminar on July 3rd at Cogan Leisure Centre, Penarth 10am – 1pm. Under 16’s £5 Adults £7. Competition regulars are encouraged to attend both. Remember BSKC subsidizes 50% of the entry fee.
Grading Exam
Sensei will be with us on either the 18th or 19th July. That leaves approximately 8 lessons. Please try and attend as many as you can so that we can polish performances for the exam. All members of the club are expected to attend training with Sensei even if they are not attempting rank promotion. Grading and training fees are due before 11th July. Training fee is £12.50. Grading fee is £12.50. I will inform you of the date and venue as soon as I know.
Advertising and Promotion
BSKC is participating in the McDonald’s “Kung Fu Panda” promotion; whereby purchasers of Happy Meals can apply for a free lesson at a local martial arts club by visiting McDonalds web site and entering their postcode. This promotion runs until 30th September.
In-club Positions
Chris Hopkins and Mark Wall have kindly volunteered to help with ‘in-club’ duties, Chris will be responsible for collecting fees, taking photos, merchandise sales etc. Please help to make his job easy by bringing in fees as soon as they are due. Mark will be teaching beginners when Jake is unable to attend.
Student Of The Month
This month I have the pleasure in awarding SOM to Kae and Spencer Evans. The boys have been keen supporters of club events including the Katathon, competitions and volunteering to help with promotion and funding. Well done lads for getting involved.
Burleigh Awards Presentation
Burleigh is holding it annual awards presentation on Sunday 24th July. We will be honoring our competition winners with a summary of results and certificates. Each club will be performing a short routine to show off their talents. We are promised that this will not be a long drawn out affair as per previous events. Please come along and give your support. Starts 1pm.
Karate Summer School
I intend running a summer school program for all kids in the club aged 8 and over. I did this a few years ago and it was very popular. I intend to hold this the second week of the summer holidays. The program will run Mon to Fri from 10 – 3pm each day. Summer school will involve lots of fun activities, not just karate. Activities will include swimming, frisbee, baseball, self-defence, dodge-ball, computer games, treasure hunt and much more. I need a minimum of 10 children to make this viable. The cost for the week is £60, which compares favourably with the cost of child minding. Here is an outline of what’s on offer. Please tell me if you are interested in your son/daughter attending and I will compile a list of attendees.

Summer Training Schedule

Grading Exam
In the process of arranging the next grading exam it’s apparent that 60% of students have not attended sufficient number of lessons to be eligible for examination in July. This leaves me in a difficult position of deciding whether to go ahead with those who are eligible or postpone until after the summer holidays. I have posted attendances on the club notice board as well as emailing everyone. Gradings are held at approximately 4 monthly intervals the last being March 2nd and it is the responsibility of students to ensure that they attend enough lessons to take exams. Those people who are currently on a once-weekly training plan and do not currently have sufficient attendance to grade are encouraged to attend additional lessons to bring them up to the required number. People are reminded that they must have a current WTKF licence to grade with Sensei Kawasoe. This matter is up for discussion at the Club Focus & Direction meeting and I will inform you of a decision thereafter.

Katathon
Many thanks to everyone who came along and supported this event. Despite low numbers we managed to raise over £300 for the club’s Competition Fund. Special thanks go to Daniel and Vicky Williams who between them managed to raise £130.
ASDA Demonstration
Many thanks to those who showed up ready to give their time promoting the club. Alas the weather and organization at ASDA went against us and in the interest of safety I decided to abandon this event. Please be reminded that I offer £10 for each new person recruited to the club on your recommendation, so please do all you can in mentioning this to people you know.

WKL Competitions
Well done to the lads who competed in Maesteg last month. Once again we placed well with 3 bronze and a silver. We have 12 people lined up to compete on June 5th in Llanelli. The next date after that is 17th July at Cogan Leisure Centre, Penarth and 24th July (WKGB, Cardiff) So far we have gained 17 ‘club points’ and are currently 8 out of 13 in the league table. The more people that attend the higher our ranking will be. I am sorry to announce that the Saturday competition training is suspended until further notice as it wasn’t getting enough support with only a few people turning up. Hopefully interest will be greater in Autumn.
Rick Clark Seminar
Thanks to Chris Hopkins who attended this course with me. As usual it was an excellent insight into kata application and I would encourage others to participate in future events.

WTKF Competition Results
Thanks to everyone who travelled up to Caernarfon to take part in the competition. I think you will agree that it was a great day and a positive experience for all those involved. Once again we had finalists in almost every event and clinched a hoard of trophies, indicating the strength of performance in both kata and kumite. Welsh Karate League Competitions
This month sees the start of the WKL competition calendar. I have emailed everyone the event categories for all WKL competitions. I will post details of each event via email and the club notice board 3 weeks prior to each competition. It’s then up to individuals to contact me with their name and the categories they wish to enter. I will make the payments and inform you on the day if there is any cost for entry. The first WKL event is at Maesteg Sports Centre, Old Forge Site, Maesteg, CF34 9EB Tel 01656 737121 on Sunday 8th May. I hope that we can field a large team and make a name for BSKC throughout the season.
Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Jessica Watkins. Jessica has a positive approach to training and is making excellent progress. It looks as though she will be a strong competitor in years to come if her recent competition success is anything to go by. Well done Jessica.
Payment Clarification
Please be reminded that those on a once-weekly plan can ‘double-up’ if they miss out on a lesson, e.g. if you miss a lesson in a given week you can do 2 lessons the next. If you take two or more weeks off for a planned absence then you are entitled to a refund as long as I know in advance. The onus is on individuals to remind me at payment time and I will calculate the fee due or refund as necessary.

As usual there will be fun stuff like games, music, mini competitions etc. The event has been put back a week to give people more time to raise sponsorship and will now be held at Burleigh on Saturday 7th May. 1-3pm. Rick Clark Seminar
Rick will be serving up his self-styled brand of self-defence and kata application at the Talybont Sports Centre, Cardiff University on Sunday the 29th May. Time 1pm to 5pm, cost £20 for the 4 hours. I encourage everyone to attend as Rick Clark is one of the foremost instructors of Kyusho-Jutsu and lessons are both fun and informative.

UKTKF Competition
Well done to Daniel Williams, Daniel Payne and Connor Morris for their success at the UKTKF National Championships in Blackpool. The lads performed brilliantly gaining bronze medals in the Team Kumite and Daniel Williams adding another in the Individuals. They narrowly missed placing higher in many events and are becoming a force to reckon with. I will post some video clips and photos on FB and get them on the web site ASAP.
WTKF Championship Caernarfon
Many thanks for the positive response this event has received. We have 16 competitors, almost 3 times the number who entered last year. Most people decided to make their own arrangements toward attending. I am sorting accommodation for those who requested it and will mail those concerned shortly. Outstanding payments are due by 11th April. Costs are £15 per person for room and £10 per person for petrol. We will be leaving Burleigh Friday at 4pm and should arrive by 10pm. The address is Arfon Leisure Centre (Bethel Rd., Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 1DU), starting at 10am. (Bring food, the canteen facilities are pretty basic)

I have made the final approvals on embroidery designs and I must say they are looking great and will be great for club promotion wherever we attend. Tracksuits will be available on the day for all those competing in Caernarfon. Everyone else can collect on Monday night. Please remember that there is £2.50 extra to pay on collection, for the embroidery on everyone’s dry core tops.
Student Of The Month Award
The award for March goes to Sam Middleton. Sam has been showing lots of enthusiasm for the sport side of karate; getting involved in tournaments and has shown a noticeable improvement in his form and speed. Hopefully it wont be long before he earns his first gold medal. Well done Sam.
‘Katathon’ Fund Raising Event
The sum of cash we had for the competition fund has quickly dwindled to zero. It is therefore time to raise some more in our annual fund raising event. This year I thought we would do go with a 2-hour kata extravaganza. This will be a sponsored event in which people will be asked to complete as many kata routines as they can in the time allotted, with everyone getting the chance to learn a new kata. As usual there will be lots of fun stuff like games, music, mini competitions etc. Sponsor forms are available now and it would be great if we could aim for a target of £25 a head. The event will take place at Burleigh on Saturday 30th April. 1-3pm. I hope to see everyone there.
Competition Classes
Things haven’t been looking too good the last few Saturdays with only a handful of people turning up. I realize that there is extra expense involved in attending but this is the only way we can improve medal chances in WKL events, once the new league starts in May. I will continue to run this class through April and see if we can up numbers to make it viable. If not I might have to cancel. Note that there is no class on April 16th due to the WTKF competition.

Grading Reports and Certificates
Most people have received their grading report by now; if not ask me at the club. Please read and note the comments as they address the key points needed to keep you improving. Sorry but certificates will be a while, as Sensei Kawasoe has to stamp them… not easy, given how busy he is.
Grading & Training DVDs
Sorry about the long wait for these. I had to get the stuff we filmed off Chris’ camcorder and then convert the files to another format only to find that I had a problem burning DVDs on my puter. I have given up on the idea of getting the training onto DVD for now and decided just to go with the examination clips as I can burn these smaller files to a CD. I have done all those requested…cost is just £2. I will refund those who paid for the full set. Film quality and camera angles are good for all…. it’s not too late to grab a copy.
New Uniforms
I note that a number of people are growing out of their current uniforms and remind you that the club offers a full range of sizes at competitive prices, £15 each up to size 2, £18 for size 3 and the rest priced on demand depending on quality required. I can order top quality suits like Blitz’s White Diamond at great savings on their list price. Always ask before you buy as I can beat most internet deals.
Twinned Clubs
A reminder that BSKC is twinned with The Academy of Karate in Duarte, California, USA. Joseph Claycomb was the first of my students to get his black belt, many years ago. Grading Success

Port Talbot Competition
Caitlin, Jamie and Sam competed in the recent WKL competition in Port Talbot and once again placed in medal positions with Jamie and Sam gaining bronze in their kumite events and Caitlin grabbing the gold. Lets hope that we have many more people wanting to take part in WKL events once the new league starts in May.

The sign up sheet for the Swansea competition is on the club notice board. The last date for signing up is Monday 7th March.
The WTKF tournament is at Arfon Leisure Centre, Caernarfon. Overnight accommodation is at Totters Hostel at just £15 per person. The hostel is a short drive from the leisure center. We used them last year and they have clean comfortable bunkrooms for 4 – 8 people. I need to book this soon as the event coincides with the start of the Easter holidays. The sign up sheet is on the club notice board and I need all attendees and entries by March 14th. I need to know the number of adults and children that will be attending this event so that I can arrange accommodation ASAP.
UKTKF Championships
Everyone who signed up to go to Blackpool should assemble outside Burleigh no later than 4:30pm on Friday 18th March. We can make a stop for food en-route or eat at the camp on arrival. Check-in for competitors is at 10am on Saturday and we will depart Cala Gran at 9:30am. We can make arrangements for Saturday night on the day. After breakfast on Sunday we can drive to a location near the pleasure beach in Blackpool and people can do their own thing for the day, meeting back at the drop off point at 4pm for the drive home.
Student Of the Month
This month the award goes to Markus Collins. Markus has been attending twice-weekly on a regular basis and has represented the club at several competitions. He is now starting to take his training seriously and is a keen attendee. His standard has risen much since joining the club 2.5 years ago and I feel it is time we recognized his commitment and achievements. Well done Markus.

Competition Training
Please remember that we are holding clinics every Saturday for everyone who is interested in entering competitions. This includes adults as well as children. The schedule was posted in the February newsletter and can be reviewed on the club’s web site. www.burleighskc.com. I have made the classes 1.5 hrs as 2 hrs was too much. Classes are currently charged at £5 payable on the day but I will lower this if more people attend.
Windsor Course
Thanks to the 5 dedicated students who attended the Brown & Black Belt Course on February 6th. I hope you all had a good time and found the training as insightful as I did. The next UKTKF event is the Spring Course over 3 days from April 29th – May 1st. You can attend some or all of the training sessions.
Tracksuits
The orders placed should be with us in approximately 6 weeks time. Malley Sports promised that all orders would be with us in time for the WTKF Tournament. They have decided to give everyone a free dry core top, sorry but I forgot that it was extra for the club logo embroidery in original pricing. We could have had them without at no extra cost but I made the decision to go with it so I'm afraid it's an extra £2.50. I collect this when you get them.
Sport’s Council Funding
I am pleased to announce that the Sport’s Council has awarded us a grant of £750 towards the purchase of equipment and instructor training. Vicky Williams and I have opened an account with NatWest bank so that we can manage the funds in a way that is visible to all our members.

Club Badges
The new badges have been ordered and should be with us soon. These will be a little larger than the old ones at 4 inches diameter and will be 100% embroidered and will come with an iron on back so that they can be easily attached. Price will be £5. Let me know if you want a new one to replace your other, although I am happy for you to wear the older version until you need a new suit etc.

Revised Fees and Payment
Despite having a decent number of members, unfortunately too few people train regularly enough and the current payment scheme does not allow me to cover my living expenses. Consequently I am restructuring the pricing and payment options. In doing so I have taken into consideration costs to individuals and family. I am now proposing reverting back to a fixed fee system. This will be a 2- tier system with the option of training once a week or multiple times. The payment options are as follows:
a) Individuals
· Once-weekly training fee = £20/month · Twice or more weekly training fee = £30/month
b) Family Groups
2 person group (including 10% discount for 2nd person) · Once-weekly training fee 1st person £20, 2nd person £18 = £38/month · Twice or more weekly training 1st person £30, 2nd person £27 = £57/month
3 person group (including 10% discount for 2nd person, 20% discount for 3rd person) · Once-weekly training fee 1st person £20, 2nd person £18, 3rd person £16 = £54/month · Twice or more weekly training 1st person £30, 2nd person £27, 3rd person £24 = £81 per month
I will allow everyone to run down their credits to zero and then ask you to pay per lesson for any remaining lessons in that month or refund as required. I will then ask that the monthly fee be paid by cash or cheque at the first training session attended in the month or be paid by standing order on the 5th or 25th of the month. For those who want flexibility in how frequently they train i.e. some months twice-weekly and others once-weekly the best option is to pay at the club. Those who are committed to training on a fixed plan are requested to set up a standing order payment, as collecting fees off everyone each month will be time consuming. Forms will be available for you to complete so that I can set up standing order payments. These must then be returned to the club and I will send them to the bank on your behalf. Payment during holiday periods will be adjusted accordingly e.g. in December fees will be halved and I will refund 50% by cheque to anyone who has set up standing orders. Likewise for summer holidays etc, as long as I know in advance the duration you are away from the club. To ensure fairness I will also allow those on a once-weekly plan to double up if they miss out on a lesson. For example if you miss a lesson in a given week you can do 2 lessons the next. However I will NOT be able to carry lessons over from month to month. The ‘attendance credit scheme’ will not be affected by these changes and anyone training 2 or more times a week will still receive an attendance credit as usual. The grading exams are being held approximately every 16 weeks meaning that those people graded above red belt will have to attend twice-weekly in some months if they are to be eligible for grading exams. This system will also put an end to cancelling classes due to low attendance on the night. By adopting this new system I will have a fixed income for each month and be better able to control my finances. I hope that you feel the changes I have made are fair and if you wish to discuss any aspect of the changes please feel free to do so.
Wednesday Night
The Wednesday class at Rogerstone School remains small at an average of just 8 students. Unfortunately the school is inflexible in their payment options and despite us only training there for 90 minutes charges me for 2 hours. I have therefore decided to move this lesson to the gym owned by Chris Isaac, based in Rogerstone. The space they have is fine for a class of up to 15 people. Other advantages are that you have the option to add a gym workout to your training whilst you are there for just £3 instead of the usual £5. This change will come into place on Jan 26th. The address is Everybody’s Gym, Unit 4 Wern Trading Estate, Rogerstone NP10 9FQ, (close to Eeezyplay). Ask for a map or look it up on Google Maps. Training time will remain unchanged at 6:30 – 8:00pm. I am happy to give people a lift so long as they are standing at the corner of Upton Rd & Risca Rd at 6:10pm.
Half-Term Break
Burleigh is open for us as usual Mon, Friday and Saturday over the half term holidays as is Everyone’s Gym on Wednesday. Remember grading exams are not far away…. see you there.
Advertising Update
Many thanks to everyone who posted flyers, your time and effort were much appreciated. Chris got a good response but alas I got few enquiries. It seems that times are hard and I will have to try other means to attract new students. One idea that came out of the F&D meeting was to advertise using company intranet sites. Many companies like the Post Office, Local Government, NHS have their own internal networks and in most cases it is possible to place information on these. This has the 2-fold advantage of being free and reaching a large number of potential members. If your place of work has such a system could you please enquire if it would be possible to promote the club and I will supply whatever documents you require. Burleigh places full-page advertisements in the Voice magazine and this curries favour with them, such that they might give us a free quarter page advertisement or publish an article about our club. I am pushing this hard to achieve a result. I am also looking at using local magazine directories to cover areas such as Bassaleg, Alt-Yr-Yn etc. I am also looking into getting car stickers made up.
Welsh Karate League
The organisers of the Welsh Karate League have approached me and asked if we would like to join their league. The WKL was established to provide regular opportunities for students of all ages to take part in kumite and kata competitions and to develop championship contenders. The WKL has been holding competitions around S. Wales e.g. Cardiff, Penarth and Swansea for the last 2 years and we have been invited to join the league when its starts afresh in May. All karate clubs within Wales are eligible to enter their competitions and these culminate in the “Champion of Champions” competition in April of each year. I personally think this is a great idea as their events are being held more regularly than the WKGB ones, the venues are close to home and competitions cost less to enter. Regular competition practice is a must if we are to breed champions of our own and this provides us with the means to do just that. I am in contact with the WKL hierarchy and will pass on more information as I get it. I am really excited by this project and hope that our students will want to compete and show the rest of S. Wales our talents. If you would like to attend the finals and see what the standard of competition is like they are being held at Cogan Leisure Centre, Penarth on 9th April, 10am – 6pm. The spectator fee is £4.50 but free to the under 10’s.
Referees & Coaches Course
With more of our students attending competitions I thought it timely to have people in the club hold referee qualifications. Mark Wall, Deena Andrews, Chris Hopkins and myself attended a course run by the WKL and gained basic certification in World Karate Federation rules and regulations. This will undoubtedly mean that our students are better informed and coached, enhancing their opportunity of winning kata and kumite matches. I am now looking for people who would like to attend the WKGB coaches course on 23rd April. Coaches are permitted to enter the match area and are vital in assisting newer competitors in event preparation, keeping an eye on proceedings and giving in-match advice.
Competition Training
As we enter more competitions the need for extra practice is essential if we are to raise standards and aim to reach finals. The major problem is time as I have a limited amount and tend to prioritise on preparing students for grading examinations. Consequently focus on competition skills takes something of a backseat until closer to events. Alas this is seldom enough preparation. I will therefore be offering competition clinics on Saturday for those who want to improve their kata and kumite skills. The following schedule will be trialed during Feb/March giving additional practice to those keen to compete. All classes will be from 1 – 3pm and cost £5. All attendees must wear full sparring kit and mouth guards for all kumite sessions.

I will continue to add dates as and when I hear about them. I realize that there is a financial commitment in entering all of these events and you might wish to be selective in those you attend but regular competition entry combined with regular squad training is the only way we can build future champions of our own. I am also talking with top level coaches such as Gareth Reynolds who was Welsh and European kumite champion in the hope that he can make visits throughout the year to help push our standards even higher. I will also be arranging our own in-club competitions as an alternative low cost way of training competitors, referees and judges.
Fund Raising
The club is committed to raising funds to supplement the cost of competition entry and the expense of travelling to and from events. Obviously, the more we can raise the greater the number of students and events we can subsidize. Our initial target is £500 and we are well on the way to achieving this. Vicky is planning another car boot sale at the end of February and I have plans to hold another fund raising event similar to the “Kickathon” we did last year. This time I am proposing that we do a sponsored kata event. More details will be given closer to the time. If anyone has other ideas for raising cash please let me know. Please continue to bring in items for the car boot sale as the response so far has been limited to just a few people. I have also applied for funding from the Sports Council and if the application is successful I will be able to purchase equipment, get all Jake’s assistant instructor qualifications sorted and have a little left over for advertising.
Club Badge
I have redesigned the club badge and the feedback from those who have seen it was very positive. I have put the design up on the club notice board for all to see. I will be getting these made up ASAP.
Tracksuit Tops
I have sourced a supplier of quality tracksuit tops. They have given me a good selection of designs and colour choices. At the recent F&D meeting I asked those in attendance to pick their preferred designs. I have posted the top 2 choices on the club notice board and I now ask each member of the club to vote on their preference. Whichever gets the most votes will become our club top. I also have a sample that I will leave out so that you see and feel the quality, I will then take orders from whoever wants one. I am particularly keen that all members who take part regularly in courses and competitions have these tracksuits. I am selling these at the cost price of £37. Each will come fully embroidered with the club badge on the rear and our club logo and name on the front. You will have to decide for yourselves if you want this to fit as tracksuit top or over-gi. Buying a size larger will serve the purpose of fitting over your karate suit and also mean that it will last you longer before you grow out of it. I will put the size chart next to the sign up list so that you have some idea of which size to order.
Student Of The Month Award
This month the award goes to Chris Hopkins. Chris has been an asset to the club, supporting us on many levels, including help with advertising, course attendance and regular training. I feel he well deserves the honour of gaining our first award in 2011. Well done, Chris.
Licence Renewals
Thanks to everyone who paid last month. Your licences should be with you in 4 – 6 weeks. I am now working on the next batch that expire March 1st. Mathew Wall, Jamie Limburn and Karl Lewis need to renew. Please make payment ASAP.
Facebook & Twitter
Jake has agreed to set up pages for us on FB and Twitter. I’m not that clued in on social media sites but I know these are popular with the kids and don’t see why we shouldn’t have a place to keep in touch, chat and share photos videos etc. Hopefully this will happen soon….. if not nag Jake ‘til it’s done.

I am keen that newsletters and news briefs are available to all, especially our younger students; please let me know if your son/daughter has an email address, or if you deem it appropriate please create one for them. If you have an alternative or work email address you would like to add to my list please send a blank email to me from that address with the title New Address and I will add this to my mailing list.
Fun Days
I think its is about time we had another Fun Day. These have lapsed of late as I use to hold them on a Saturday and with the cancellation of Saturday training and the unavailability of the dojo it has not been easy to hold these events. However I am aware that they were popular with students and I am keen to start them again. Burleigh has recently ceased with its ballet program and this has freed up the dojo at a suitable time. I therefore propose that we have the first event on March 26th from 1 – 2:30pm. Cost will be 1 attendance credit or £4.50. All children aged 7 – 16 are invited to attend. Fun, games and prizes galore.

Chris is more than happy to continue updating the web site but commitment to his new business means it is difficult for him to do this as often as I would like. If anyone has any skill in this area please let me know ASAP and we can talk about what is involved and remuneration.

End Of Year Awards
I will be presenting the awards on Friday 7th after the first training session. Well done to Mathew Wall who takes the ‘Attendance’ award and Daniel Williams, who earns the ‘Student Of The Year’ award for the second time for his attendance record, attitude to training and participation and success in numerous competitions throughout 2010. Well done to both.

Fund Raising
Vicky Williams is happy to keep doing car boot sales to raise cash for the competition fund. Could you please bring in any unwanted Xmas presents, old toys, DVDs, video games etc as we would like to push the fund towards £1000.
Club Focus & Direction Meeting
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 18th January in the Handpost Pub at 8:00pm. Many good points and ideas came out of the last meeting and I invite all members and parents to attend and share your views, comments and suggestions. I will be detailing plans to restructure pricing and payment amongst other things so please try and attend as I need your feedback. The meeting should last approx 1 hr.
Gym Membership Offer
Chris Isaac has recently taken ownership of Everybody’s Gym located at Unit 4, Wren Trading Estate, Rogerstone. The gym looks great with brand new machines, weights and aerobic stuff. ETKF Windsor Course
The next ETKF course is scheduled for Sunday 13th Feb. All students graded purple belt and above are encouraged to attend. Cost is £10.
Next Grading Exam
I have requested a date in late Feb or early March depending on Sensei’s commitments. That leaves about 8 – 10 weeks to train up. Please ensure that you attend regularly so that you are fully prepared for the exams.
New Member Purchases
New members who have completed the beginner’s course are now asked to purchase a karate suit, club badge and the “Guide To Training In Karate-Do” CD. Any existing members who don’t have these items are also asked to purchase ASAP, thanks.
Suiyo-kai
Sensei Kawasoe holds a special ‘Suiyo-kai’ class for advanced students once a month at his club in London. It is expected that Dan grades attend several of these each year, other grades are also welcome to attend. Details of the dates are listed in the ‘Calendar’ section of the club website.

UKTKF/WTKF Junior Championships
As most of you are aware the UKTKF holds it’s own ‘in-house’ championships each year in Thornton - Blackpool. To date we have not attended but there is a first time for everything. If anyone would like to take part the event is on Saturday 19th March. We should be able to meet some if not all of the entry fees and transport cost.

Christmas Party
This year Burleigh is organizing the Xmas party for its various clubs. The party will be held on Dec 22nd starting at 6pm. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £4 for children. They will be providing a hog roast with seasonal vegetables and drinks. There will be a disco and karaoke, as well as a visit from Santa who will hand out gifts to children. Tickets can be obtained from Mark or at the reception office. Buy soon to avoid disappointment as they are limited to 180 and there are a lot of other clubs and activities sharing the event.
Adult Xmas Bash
As in previous years we will be having a night out for the grown ups. I would like to have this on Dec 16th. Meet at Weatherspoons (Tom Toya Lewis) 7:30pm for drinks followed by a meal at TBA. No need for tickets, just share the cost of the meal. All members aged 18+ and parents are invited. If you have a restaurant preference please let me know ASAP so that I can make the reservation.
Competition Fund
The raffle at the Firework’s Party raised £70 and we have added this to the £50 raised from photo and DVD sales. Vicky Williams kindly did a car-boot sale and raised an additional £207 bringing the total to £327, so not far to go to our first target of £500. Vicky is happy to do more car-boots for us so please have a rummage through your cupboards, attic, garage etc to see what can be donated. Vicky is particularly keen to have any unwanted DVDs and computer games as these sell really well.
Grading Success
Jake took his black belt exam at the UKTKF course in Windsor and was successfully awarded his ‘Shodan’ by Sensei Kawasoe. This makes him the first person to graduate from beginner to black belt at the club and will hopefully inspire others to train hard for theirs. Jake will now take his place alongside other Dan grades as assistant instructor at the club. Please remember to call him Sensei from now on.
Holiday Closure
The last training session this year will be on Monday 20th Dec. The club will reopen on 3rd Jan I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and to thank everyone associated with BSKC for their support and hard work. Let’s hope we go from strength to strength in 2011.

Cancelling Lessons
In the event of problems such as Burleigh closing unexpectedly or me being ill I will do my best to inform everyone in advance by email or phone. Bad weather is seldom an issue for me as I live close to Burleigh and can walk to the club. So please don’t assume that just because it’s snowing hard that we will be shut. I need a minimum of 6 people to make each lesson viable. Parents are asked to wait until 5 minutes past the lesson start time before leaving Burleigh. That way if I do have to cancel you will be able to take your son/daughter home again.
New Year Plans
I am always looking at ways to improve the club and offer the best to all. I have plans to create a ‘Competitions Page’ on the website where we can display results, photos and video clips. I will also be upgrading other pages. Jake has offered to set up a Facebook page for the club. I have redesigned the club badge and will be getting the new design made up soon. I have also found a site that offers customized tracksuits and hope that I get enough interest to place an order so that our competition entrants have a ‘cool’ team identity. We will also be having another ‘Focus and Direction’ meeting In January where we can discuss other ideas you may have.

Vale Development Competition
Well done to everyone who took part in the competition. In total we came away with 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze from the 20 events entered; showing that we have plenty of talent in our club. Fund Raising
Many thanks to everyone who placed orders for grading pictures and DVDs. The sales allowed us to put £50 in the Competition Fund. Also many thanks to everyone who brought in items for the car boot sale. Vicky now has enough stuff to do several ‘boots’ and hopefully build towards our target of £500. There will be also be a raffle at the Fireworks Party and we are happy to accept items for prizes.
Fireworks Party
Chris has kindly allowed us to use the Manor Hotel grounds for the display on Saturday 13th Nov at 6:30pm. We will be providing food and soft beverages and hopefully will be able to put on a decent 30 min display. Cost is £5 for individuals and £10 for a family group.
Changes To Training Schedule
Commencing November the Saturday classes will cease. Instead we will have a class on Wednesday evening at Rogerstone School. Class will start at 6:30pm and is open to ALL grades.
Grading DVD
Sorry for the delay in getting these done but we had a few technical problems getting the video off the camera’s hard drive. All is now done and you should get your copy this week. If anyone else would like to order let me know and I will do a copy for £2.
Windsor Brown & Black Belt Course
The next course is at Windsor Leisure Centre on Sunday 28th November starting 12:30pm. It is hoped that all brown and black belts will attend as these courses count towards your Dan grading eligibility. Jake will be attempting his Shodan so wish him luck. Cost is £10. Anyone needing a lift should tell Mark ASAP.

Grading Exam Success
Well done to everyone who passed their grading exam. The turnout was the biggest in the history of the club with 33 people taking the exam. We managed 27 full passes and 6 temporary ones. Please be reminded that in order to be eligible for the next grading exam in February the following lesson attendance is required
· 9th kyu (red belt) = 15 lessons · 8th / 7th kyu (orange & yellow belt) = 20 lessons · 6th / 5th kyu (green & purple belt) = 25 lessons · 4th / 3rd kyu (purple/white & brown belt) = 30 lessons · 2nd / 1st kyu (brown & brown/white) = 30 lessons · 1st Dan (black) = 12 months training and attendance at 6 courses with Sensei Kawasoe
If club members aim for an average weekly attendance of 1.5 classes there will be no problem achieving these targets.

Sensei Kawasoe obligingly posed for photos with many of our club members. I now have these available to email (free of charge) to those who would like a copy. If you would like an A4 size print I can do so at a cost of £2. If you would also like this framed I can do this for £5. Sensei Kawasoe agreed to autograph all pictures on his next visit. If anyone would like a copy of the grading exam video I can burn it to DVD for £2. All money collected from this will be put in a fund to help subsidize costs of competition entry for our squad members.
Student Of the Month
This month the award goes to Andrew Suffield. Andrew has been training regularly despite a few injuries; showing good attitude in the face of adversity. He also put in the effort to learn all the kata required to grade for his yellow belt and well deserved his grade.
Inter-club Competition
Vale Karate Club has invited us to attend their ‘Development Competition’ on Saturday 16th October. The aim is to give students the chance to ‘taste’ what it is like to enter competitive events in kata and kumite by competing amongst themselves. The competition is open to all children under 14 years old. Entrance is free with separate categories for boys and girls.
The event is to be held at YMCA Hub, Barry, starting 1pm. See club notice board for details of categories and sign-up sheet. Deadline for sign-up is Monday Oct 11th. All kumite entrants must have a mouth guard. I hope that as many as possible take up the opportunity to have a go. I can take 4 in my car on a first come, first served basis. Note there will be NO SATURDAY CLASS on this day.
Prior to this; (same day) if any junior or senior grades are interested in improving their Competitive Kumite, there is a 2-hour Kumite session with Coach Gareth Reynolds (Welsh, British, Commonwealth Champion) from 9am, this costs £5. Let me know ASAP if you are interested.
Brown & Black Belt Course
The next ETKF brown and black belt course is being held in Windsor on Sunday 28th November. Brown belts are reminded that they are expected to attend 6 such courses prior to attending their black-belt exam. See Mark if you need a lift. Cost £10 plus share of petrol.
Saturday Classes
Attendance at Saturday classes has been low for a while now. This is in part due to the fact that Burleigh has pushed us into an unfavourable time slot. I am considering doing away with this class and adding Wednesday evening 6:30 – 8:00pm at Rogerstone school as many people said that they liked the venue and I feel it will be more convenient and facilitate access to more members. I welcome feedback regarding these proposals, please email me with your views. If the response is positive we will commence changes from the start of November.
Fireworks Party
Burleigh are not doing their usual Halloween Party this year and so I thought as an alternative people might like to attend a Fireworks Party at the Manor Hotel 7:00pm on 6th November. This event is still tentative but the plan would be to put on a 30 min display and have some baked potatoes and BBQ sausages. Children could come in fancy dress costume and play some games (weather permitting). I will confirm if this is to go ahead in next 2 weeks.
New Dan Grade Members
The club welcomes our newest black- belt recruits to the ranks. Thirza is 15-year veteran of the art and is currently graded Nidan. Chris holds a Shodan in Shito-ryu kempo and is feeling his way back into martial arts after a bit of a layoff. Please continue to tell people about the club, especially adult members and girls whom we are eager to recruit. Remember I reward you with £10 for each person who joins after completing the beginner’s course.
Club Training Guide
Could I please ask any members who do not own a copy of the BSKC Training Guide CD to purchase one. This is an invaluable guide packed with lots of information, pictures and videos that aims to inform you of everything you will ever need to know on your journey from beginner to 3rd Dan. This includes the UKTKF grading syllabus and the current version of the WKF competition rules, as well as all 27 Shotokan kata videos, training guides, FAQ’s and much more. My records show that the following people have not yet purchased their copy: Joseph Dowdall, Isobel Foulks, Retej & Robin Khosa, Jamie Limburn, Jack Marsden, Sam Middleton, Robbie Mills, Isabella Luciani, Caitlin Morrison, Aneurin Owen. Cost is just £5.
Kumite Training and Protection
We will be doing lots of kumite practice in the next few weeks. Please remember to bring in your mitts, pads and gumshields so that we can all stay safe during practice. I only have a limited number of spares and ask that members purchase their own protection rather than relying on having the kit available to borrow. I have a few sets for sale and I am happy to order in extra sets as required, just let me know colour (red or blue) and shoe size. The cost of a full set of mitts, shin pads and foot protectors is £35. I would also encourage all regular competition entrants to have a set in EACH colour as it’s becoming quite difficult to share around the kit we have and it won’t be long before somebody is disqualified for having incorrect kit or not being able to get kitted up in time.

Grading Dates
The date for the next grading exam has been set for WED 29th SEPT, Main Hall, Rogerstone Junior School, Ebenezer Drive. Training will be from 6:00-7:30pm followed by the grading at 7:45pm. All club members are requested to attend training. The fee is £12.50 for training and a additional £12.50 if you are grading. Money should be paid by FRI 17th SEPT. Remember to hand in your UKTKF Record Book along with payment. Can I ask for a few volunteers to be at the school by 4:30pm to help me set up the hall.

New Training Times
We will be starting with the new class times from Monday 6th Sept. Classes are as follows: White Belts to Green Belts Mon & Fri 6:10 – 7:30pm. Purple belts and above Mon & Fri 7:35 – 9:00pm. Saturday classes remain unchanged at 3:00 – 4:30pm for all grades, recommencing 11th Sept. Tiny Tigers classes will now run on Mon & Fri 5:00 – 6:00pm from the 6th Sept.

The Welsh Open Championships will take place on Sun 26th Sept at the Welsh Institute For Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Application forms should be with me in the next week or two, please sign up on the club notice board ASAP thereafter.

Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Mark Wall. Mark is a regular attendee who always trains with seriousness and intent. Mark has also been helping out with Tiny Tiger classes and has fully supported the club’s social & charity events as well as numerous competitions. I can’t ask more of a member. Well done.

Inter-club Competition
I have been talking with a few instructors about having our own mini-competition. Hopefully we should be able to get something off the ground this Autumn. I will let you know more details as soon as we have worked things out.

TT & Karate At Rogerstone School
As you may know I have been running classes in the same vein as Tiny Tigers at Rogerstone Junior school for the last few months. Numbers are slowly increasing. Any TT member is most welcome to come along to this class on Tuesday 5:00-6:00pm. I am also starting a new beginners course at Rogerstone with about a dozen people on Tues from 6:15 – 7:45pm. Any white belts aged 8 and above are welcome to attend.
New Venues
I hope to be offering classes at Gaer Junior School and Bassaleg Comprehensive as an after-school activity from early September. I am also in discussion with the Guides, offering short ‘taster’ lessons to Brownies.

WKGB Junior Championships
The BSKC squad did us proud at the recent Welsh Junior Open Championships. Despite fielding a small team the ‘lads’ had their best results to date at this venue. Daniel Williams gained a silver medal in the Boys (10 –12) Kata and Jamie Limburn was awarded bronze. Mathew Wall, the youngest member of the team, came away with a bronze medal in the Boys (Under 10) Kata. Daniel Payne, Daniel Williams and Connor Morris then fought their way to a bronze medal in the Team Kumite. All the matches in the Individual Kumite were very close with Connor managing to progress to the quarterfinals before loosing to the referee’s decision after extra time. If anyone has any action shots from this event could you please email them to me so that we can include these on the new competition page of the web site that Chris is setting up. The next opportunity to compete at the WIS, Cardiff is on Sunday 26th September.

The annual UKTKF Summer Camp is at Herriot Watt University, Edinburgh on 20th 21st & 22nd August. The course starts 4pm Friday. Black belt gradings are on Saturday after training. Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Jake Rogers. Jake has supported the club in numerous ways from making videos, helping out with events & competitions, recruitment and teaching and has been training regularly for his attempt at his Dan grade in November.
New Training Times
In September we will be changing to the new schedule allowing students to be taught in smaller, grade appropriate groups. The class times will change to Monday & Friday 6:10 – 7:30pm & 7:40 – 9:00pm. The earlier class is for beginners to green belt followed by the later class for purple belt and above. Saturday training will remain unchanged and open for all grades providing I get sufficient attendance when we recommence in September.
Karate Kid Movie
I tried to get some advertising going in cinemas but was beaten to this by a rival club. Let’s hope that the popularity of this movie will inspire people to take up the art. Now might be a good time to try and recruit friends and family. Remember I offer £10 for each person that you bring to the club as long as they pay for the first set of lesson credits.
Interclub Competition
In an attempt to give people more experience at competition karate and encourage new people to join the BSKC squad I am talking with several instructors in S. Wales to see if we can organize some friendly inter-club events. The first such event should happen in Autumn after the grading. I’ll let you know more details nearer the time.

Members Meeting
Many thanks to all who attended the meeting. I value your input and ideas and will be implementing your suggestions. As requested I will continue to hold these meetings every 4 months.
Grading Postponed
I regretfully inform you that Sensei Kawasoe will not be able to visit us until September. I had hoped to get him down before the summer holidays but alas he is not available on the days I requested. Summer is a very busy time for Sensei as he takes his annual leave in Japan and this is followed by teaching commitments in Edinburgh and outside the country. As many people will be away over the summer I decided it better to wait until schools resume so that nobody misses out. On the plus side this will allow our newer members time to learn the syllabus and take the grading as well. If you have already paid for the exam let me know if you would like a refund, if not I will hang onto the money. Regarding grading eligibility all members of the club had reached their required training attendance and to keep things fair I will start recoding attendance anew from the start of July.
Summer/Autumn Schedule
As per usual at this time of year I am adjusting training times to take account of lower numbers due to people vacationing. Classes will remain as normal up to the end of the school term. Thereafter I will be dropping the Saturday class and reducing Tiny Tigers to Friday only. All other class times remain unchanged until September. At the start of the new school term there will be changes to the class times and structure. In order to optimise each class I will be dividing the club into lower and higher grades as follows: Monday & Friday 6:10 – 7:30pm 10th – 6th kyu, 7:30 – 9:00pm 5th kyu and above. If numbers warrant I will resume Saturday class for all grades at the regular time 3:00 – 4:30pm. If you are a junior member and find the Monday class goes on too late then you are asked to attend the earlier class and I will do my best to accommodate your needs. The reason for these changes is twofold. First I am trying to alleviate the problem of overcrowding and second it enables me to tailor each class more specifically to the needs of the individual.

Karate Summer School
I intend running a summer school program for all kids in the club aged 8 and over. I did this a few years ago and it was very popular. I intend to hold this the first week of the summer holidays. The program will run Mon to Fri from 10 – 3pm each day. The summer school will involve lots of fun activities, not just karate. Activities will include swimming, frisbee, baseball, self-defence, dodgeball, computer games, treasure hunt and much more. I need a minimum of 10 children to make this viable. The cost for the week is £60, which compares favourably with the cost of child minding and is considerably cheaper than the £140 that Burleigh is charging for their summer school program. Here is an outline of what’s on offer. Please email me if you are interested in your son/daughter attending and I will compile a list of attendees.

Fund Raising
One of the ideas to come out of the members meeting was to establish a fund to help subsidize events such as competition entry, transportation to and from competitions and courses, provide supporter T-shirts etc. Vicky Williams will be take on the role of organizer finding sponsors and coordinating money raising events so that we can establish a fund to be held in a bank account. Our initial target is £500.
Tiny Tigers
Several students from Tiny Tigers will be joining us at the end of July. Please make them feel welcome and try to help them out with matters of organization, etiquette and training. To help facilitate this I will be assigning a few students to train along side them as mentors.

Grading Exam
I have put in a request with Sensei Kawasoe for a date in the last week of June or the first week of July. I will inform of the date as soon as I hear back. I intend changing the venue from Burleigh to Rogerstone Primary School. The reason being that member numbers have grown such that space at Burleigh has become limited. Rogerstone school has a large modern gymnasium with a good floor and great lighting. The school is easy to find, simply head down Risca Rd and go straight ahead at the M4 roundabout, turn first left onto High Cross Lane (there is a cycle shop on corner) and follow this as it bears left and down the hill. Take the 2nd right at Ebeneezer Drive and the school is at the end, approx 2 miles away from Burleigh. If you prefer you can print off directions from this link http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl There is ample car parking in front of the school. Training will commence at 6pm followed by the grading exam at approximately 7:45pm. We should be finished by 9pm. The fee is £25 covering both training and grading. If you are not grading the training fee alone is £12.50. Attendance from ALL club members is expected on the night. Payment should be made by Saturday 26th June at latest.
Kickathon
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this event a great success. Your effort and generosity will be much appreciated by everyone at the Harriet Davis Trust. I would like to add my special thanks to Daniel Williams who raised £140. In total we managed to raise £1237. Hopefully we can add a little more from sales of pictures taken at the event by photographer Amy Bishop. She has left a flip folder in the reception area. Burleigh Awards Presentation
The Awards Presentation acknowledges the personal achievements of all those associated with Burleigh who have won an award this academic year and are invited to attend the ceremony along with family and friends. This event is being held on Sunday July 18th starting 1:00pm. We have been asked to do a brief demonstration and the press will be on hand to record the event for the local papers. I hope you will be able to attend and share your success with a wider audience.
Student of The Month Award
This month the award goes to Tyne Hughes. Tyne has the second highest attendance and also managed to raise a whopping £81.50 in the Kickathon. Despite a few ups and downs in class she has been trying much harder of late and her tenacity exemplifies the spirit needed to excel at karate.
Member Feedback Session
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter I appreciate feedback from members and parents. With the academic year drawing to a close it seems like a good time to hold an informal meeting where everyone is invited to air their views on all aspects of how the club is being run. I propose we meet in the Handpost Inn on Monday 21st June after training for a chat. I’m buying.

Summer BBQ
Chris and I thought it would be a great idea to hold a Summer event for club members, family and friends to help mark the end of another academic year. You are all invited to The Manor Hotel on Sunday 11th July at 4pm. The club will provide BBQ food and soft drinks. There is no charge but we ask that you bring a small dish of pasta, rice, salad or dip and any alcoholic drinks you fancy. The hotel has a large garden that we can use to play games (some wetter than others) and I will provide music. I need to know numbers in advance so please sign up on the sheet I have left on the club notice board.

WTKF Competition Results
Congratulations to all who took part in the recent WTKF competition in Caernarfon. I am very proud of the effort and determination shown by all competitors in the training leading up to the event and the individual performances on the day. Despite a few set backs with the travel we managed to arrive on time and our team more than held their own against the North Wales competitors who were themselves very good. We managed to put either one or two competitors into 7 of the 10 finals and came away with a hoard of trophies. Which considering we were outnumbered 15:1 was a fantastic achievement. Here is a summary of the final positions:

The total would probably have been even greater if some of our competitors hadn’t had early round draws against some of the eventual winners, but then that’s the nature of such events. Other points of note were that Daniel Williams gained the single highest score in ANY event for his kata performance and Jamie was the only person to win 2 events outright. Daniel Payne gave excellent performances in all his events but the standard at 3rd Kyu and above was very high and he often found himself competing against experienced 1st Kyu and 1st Dan competitors. Despite that he got himself into several finals including Individual Kata and Team Kata, Daniel took the 1st round in the free-fighting comfortably but then succumbed to a brilliant reverse back-kick in the 2nd round and despite his injury fought on bravely. Alas his black belt opponent was too experienced and ended up winning the category. We gained many commendations from the host parents, judges and instructors and will definitely be returning next year to see if we can emulate this success.
Any participant, parent or interested party that would like to see the individual performances please let me know and I will put then on DVD for you to watch. £2 per disc. We have forwarded details and pictures to a local reporter and the Argus press officer in the hope of getting this in the papers. Charity Kickathon
I intend holding a sponsored kickathon in support of Sensei Masterman’s fund raising for the Harriet Davis Trust, a charity supporting the families of children with rare degenerative disease in West Wales. The event will take place on Saturday 15th May in place of the regular class. Individuals are invited to attempt as many kicks as possible in 1 hour. Kicks are performed in sets of 100. Your effort doesn’t have to be continuous, you can take a break at any time and you can quit when you’ve had enough. There will be music, games and refreshments. To ensure all is above board we will have people monitoring and recording individual effort and there is a prize for the person who performs the greatest number of kicks. You can get a sponsor form from me in class then please try to raise as much support as you can between now and the event. We have photographer Amy Bishop taking pictures on the day and she is offering these for sale at a cost of £5 each and she will donate £2 from each sale to the charity. Hopefully we will also have on the day press coverage for this event.
Student Of The Month
This month we have a special joint award that goes to Jamie, Daniel W. Mathew, Daniel P. Jay and Connor for their commitment to training and their performance and success in the WTKF Comp. Sensei Chris and myself are proud to be their instructors. Well done.
Rogerstone Primary School
I am currently holding classes as Rogerstone Primary School on Tuesdays from 5 – 6pm. Any junior student who wishes to come along and do additional training is more than welcome. Cost £3 per lesson. The gym hall that we are using is superb and I am considering using this as the venue for the next training session and grading with Sensei Kawasoe as we can fit lots more people in.

UKTKF Spring Course
The Spring course planned for 23 – 25th April was cancelled due to the fact that Senseis Kawasoe, Naito and Tsuyama were stuck in Japan due to the disruption in air travel. This course is being rescheduled for a later date that I will inform you about as soon as I know details.

WTKF Junior Championships
The following people will be representing the club at the WTKF Junior Championships in Caernarfon this month. Daniel Williams, Joshua Myles, Jay Coles, Jaimie Limburn, Mathew Wall, Connor Morris, Aneurin Owen and Daniel Payne. I would like these people to attend ALL available classes in the run up to the competition so that we can practice individual and group events. I will be holding 2 extra training sessions for competitors only on Saturday 10th and 17th April from 4:30 – 6:00pm, these classes are free of charge. I still need to sort accommodation and travel with the families concerned. I urge those concerned to reply to the email I sent last week.
Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Karish Seeburrun. Karish has upped his attendance and is now training regularly twice-weekly and is trying hard in class. Consequently I have seen a marked improvement in his basic technique since joining the club.
Charity Event
Sensei James Masterman is embarking on his annual charity fundraiser on 1st May. He will be walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path a distance of 186 miles, which he hopes to finish in 7 days. Money collected will be donated to the Harriet Davis Trust who provide holiday accommodation for disabled children and their families. I will be supporting his effort by walking with him on one of the days. I would be grateful if people would sponsor this event. I will be handing out sponsorship forms after Easter.
Sensei Dave Hazard Course

UKTKF Spring Course
Sensei Kawasoe and other high ranked Japanese instructors will be holding the annual Spring Camp at Windsor Leisure Centre on 23rd 24th and 25th April. All brown and black belts are encouraged to attend this event as attendance on these courses is a pre-requisite for attempting Dan promotion cost £10 per day.

We have been invited to attend a course with this experienced instructor. Rick visits the UK twice a year teaching kyusho-jutsu (pressure point fighting) and kata bunkai. Date: Sunday 2nd May 1pm - 5pm at Talybont Sports Centre Cardiff University, cost £20

Exam Congratulations
Well done to everyone on passing their grading exam. Sensei Kawasoe and I were very pleased with the standard of performance. This was in part due to the fact that many students are training regularly and I hope this continues into the future. Ideally students should aim for an average attendance of 1.5 – 2 times a week. Here is a reminder of the attendance required to be eligible for the next colour of belt.
· 9th kyu (red belt) = 10 lessons · 8th / 7th kyu (orange & yellow belt) = 15 lessons · 6th / 5th kyu (green & purple belt) = 20 lessons · 4th / 3rd kyu (purple/white & brown belt) = 25 lessons · 2nd / 1st kyu (brown & brown/white belt) = 30 lessons · 1st Dan (black) = 50 lessons and attendance at 6 courses with Sensei Kawasoe

Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Mathew Wall. Mathew exemplifies the enthusiasm and dedication needed to excel at karate. He attends regularly and does additional training at home and despite just having transferred from Tiny Tigers has learnt both his orange and yellow belt kata. Well done Mathew, keep it up.
WTKF Junior Competition
I have circulated details and entry forms to all students for the upcoming WTKF Competition being held in Caernarfon on 24th April. Note this is a free competition open to all children aged 5 to 15. I hope that as many as possible will be able to attend as there are many categories to suit all ages and abilities and I feel we have an excellent chance of medal success. Please return completed forms to Sensei Chris or myself ASAP.

Welsh Junior & Senior Championships
The next WKGB organized event takes place at the Welsh Institute For Sport in Cardiff on Sunday April 4th. I will post sign-up sheets on the club notice board as soon as I receive them. This would be a good warm-up event for the WTKF event 3 weeks later.
UKTKF Junior Championships
This huge competition is scheduled for Sat 20th March in Thornton near Blackpool. I have competition entry forms for anyone interested.
Bushi-Kai Open Championships
Yet another competitive event open to all. This takes place in Port Talbot (40 miles away) on Sunday 21st March. See me ASAP if you are interested in taking part and I will obtain details.

Grading & Training With Sensei Kawasoe
Not long to go now. Please try to attend the grading practice sessions being held each class. The grading has been set for Monday 22nd February. Training will commence at 6pm prompt so please arrive by 5:40pm at latest. The grading will start at approximately 7:45pm and should be over by 8:30pm. I require payment of £12.50 and UKTKF record books from all those who intend to grade ASAP. Cost of training with Sensei Kawasoe is £12.50. The deadline for all payments is Monday 15th February
Training Attendance
I am sorry to report that insufficient numbers are meeting the required training average of 1.5 times a week. As a consequence we have a low percentage of club members grading this time around. Saturday classes in particular are not well attended. Over the last 2 months the average has been just 6 students per class. If attendance continues at this level I will have to consider holding training on Monday and Friday only. I will continue to publish attendance averages each month so that everyone is aware of their own attendance. Please be prepared to add extra sessions if you have a low attendance average as the consequence is that you might not be eligible for grading. For those who are coming regularly and earning attendance credits please let me know if you wish to cash in any of your credits for gifts. I have added new items to the list and made this available to view in the Training Times & Fees section of the club website www.burleighskc.com
Member Recruitment Incentive
We have had a lot of new members join lately so I thought it worthwhile mentioning again that I offer £10 for each new member you get to join the club. Despite running this offer for over a year only 1 person has claimed a free tenner. Please do all you can to inform friends, schoolmates, neighbours, relatives, work colleagues etc. I am particularly interested in recruiting adult members and females of all ages. I have posters, flyers and postcards to help with advertising if required…just ask.
Student Of The Month
The award this month goes to Daniel Payne. It’s over a year since he last received this award but I have noticed much improvement in Daniel’s karate of late; coupled with a more serious attitude to training. Hopefully we will have another brown belt to add to the ranks soon.
WTKF Junior Championships
I have just received details of this FREE competition from the WTKF. The competition is hosted by our own federation and is specifically orientated to children of all ages and ranks up to age 15. Varied events to match every age and skill level; including 5-step sparring, 1-step sparring and semi-free sparring. There are even special ‘Tiny Tots’ kata and kumite events for the under 9’s. I will be giving each child an application form and I will devote as much class time as possible in preparation. I hope I can count on your support as either participant or parent. If I get sufficient numbers I will consider hiring a minibus or even a coach…. Here’s hoping. The event is on Saturday 24thApril in Caernarfon. Starts 10am. NOTE: All participants must be in possession of a current WTKF licence. Please return forms as soon as possible so that I can plan training schedules. THANKS.

Festivities
Many thanks to everyone who participated or helped out with the seasonal festivities and also those who gave cards and gifts. I hope everyone enjoyed their parties as much as I did. We start training again on Monday 4th January. We shall be celebrating the commencement of the club’s sixth year on Friday 22nd January with some fun activities in class and birthday cake for afters. Grading Exams
Please be reminded that I have requested Monday 15th February as the date for the next grading exam. If Sensei is able to commit to that date it leaves us with just 18 training sessions. I will let you know the exact date as soon as I have had confirmation. Could you please start making payment and bringing in your UKTKF record books so that I have all by the end of the month. The cost of training and grading is the same as last year, £12.50 for each, thanks.

Can I remind all recently joined members that you are requested to purchase the ‘Training Guide’ CD (£5) and club badge (£4). New members are also reminded that payment into the club’s lesson credit system is due on the first lesson attended. Club Secretary Position
As member numbers have grown so has the amount of record keeping and chasing up that needs to be done. So much so that I am now finding it difficult to do all the in-club administration each lesson. If any adult would like to help out please let me know and I will explain in more detail what is required. This post would ideally suit someone who attends regularly. If more than one person is interested I will take attendance into consideration.
Club Member Meetings
In an attempt to encourage feedback and provide a voice for all the members I have decided to hold meetings on a 4-monthly basis. This will take the form of an informal get together in the pub at which we can discuss all matters relating to the club, training etc. It is hoped that this discussion will allow everyone to air their views and have a say regarding the club. This feedback should then allow me to make decisions regarding how the club is run and make the club even better than it is already. No need to sign up for anything simply turn up on the day.
ETKF Windsor Course
The next ETKF brown and black belt course is scheduled for Sunday 14th Feb. I expect all those preparing to take their Dan grade in April to attend. Cost is £10 plus a share of petrol.
UKTKF/WTKF Junior Championships
As most of you are aware the UKTKF holds it’s own ‘in-house’ championships each year in Thornton - Blackpool. To date we have not attended but there is a first time for everything. If anyone would like to take part the event is on Saturday 20th March. There is also a WTKF Junior Competition in Caernarfon Saturday May 15th.

Xmas Parties
The date for this years Xmas parties are Sunday 13th Dec for junior members at Burleigh 5:00 – 7:30pm and Thurs Dec 17th for adults at the Juboraj Indian restaurant, meeting at Tom Toya Lewis pub at 7:00pm with meal to follow at 8pm. The cost for the children’s party is £5 per head, siblings also welcome. Tickets available from Mark or Chris. Parents enter free of charge. We kindly ask that you bring a plate of party food for the buffet (not all sausage rolls please) As usual lots of fun, games, table quiz, raffle and gifts for all. Welsh Open Competition
Many thanks to Daniel Williams, Daniel Payne, Jamie Limburn and Caitlin Morrison for representing the club in the recent WKGB competition. Despite trying their best they were matched against experienced competitors and being drawn against the eventual 1st and 2nd place winners meant that medal success eluded them on this occasion. Please note that all future competitions will require payment in advance from all who intend to take part.
ETKF Course
A reminder that the next ETKF Brown and Black Belt course is being held at the Windsor Leisure Centre on November 29th at 12:30pm. All senior grades are expected to attend in preparation for their black belt exam.
Attendance Figures
Can I remind all members that you should have a weekly average of 1.5 lessons or more if you are to meet the required number of lessons to be eligible for the grading exam in February. In the past I have postponed the grading exam so that those with low attendance have a chance to catch up. Sorry but this will no longer be the case and if you cannot commit to regular training you may have to forego the opportunity to take the exam.
Saturday Attendance
Lately attendance on Saturday has not been good. I am aware that the time and day is not ideal for everyone but it’s a case of having to fit in with what Burleigh can offer us. I will continue to offer Saturday classes on the proviso that I have a minimum of 6 students in attendance. If numbers do not pick up I will be forced to cancel this class in the New Year. I am looking at finding another suitable venue so that I can offer Weds night training instead.

Halloween

October 2009 Newsletter
Exam Success
Well done to everyone who passed their grading exam. The overall standard was very good. I am aware that the time between gradings is rather long. Ideally they should be held every 4 months. The reason they have not been as frequent is due to the fact that too many people are not meeting the required number of training sessions within the 4 month period and so I am having to extend the time between exams. Members should try to attend twice-weekly and maintain an minimum average of 1.5 lessons a week. The next grading is scheduled for mid February. I have DVD copies of the training session and grading for anyone who wants, cost £2.
Student Of the Month
This month the award goes to Bryony Hancock. Bryony has a great attitude to training and always tries hard to get her technique correct, as well as having a very good attendance record. Well done Bryony.
Welsh Open Championship
I’ve posted competition details and a sign up sheet on the club notice board. I hope that as many as possible will take the opportunity to take part and represent the club. The event is scheduled for Saturday 10th October, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Please make payment by Monday 5th October. On reading the WKF rules carefully it appears that face protectors and body armour are only required by cadets (14 & 15 years old). We shall be training hard prior to the event so please remember to bring mitts and foot protectors to each class. I have mitts, foot protectors and shin guards for sale, price £15 each or at a discounted price of £40 if you buy all three.
Suiyo-Kai
I think it’s about time we did another trip to London to train with Sensei Kawasoe. The next Suiyo-Kai is on Weds 7th October. Please see me ASAP if you want to share a lift. I will pay the training fee this time round if we can share petrol cost. We have to leave Burleigh at 4:15pm and should be back about 11:30pm.

Grading Exam
I have requested the following dates for the next grading exam; 6pm Mon 28th Sept or Mon 5th Oct. It’s now a case of waiting for confirmation which hopefully won’t be long in coming. As usual we will have pre-grading training with Sensei Kawasoe followed by examinations. Cost is £12.50 for the training session and £12.50 for the exam. To be eligible for the grading students must have completed the required number of training sessions and have a current UKTKF licence. I will be posting attendance figures in class. Saturday Class Time
Burleigh have requested that we relinquish the 12:30pm Saturday class as they need the ballet suite for classes. The alternative would have been to move the class to Sunday but this was problematic for many of the regular attendees and so I have decided to keep to Saturday but change the start time to 3:00pm. I welcome any feedback regarding this change.
Congratulations
Well done to Rob and Tim on obtaining their black-belt qualification. It took almost 6 years but they got there in the end. The grading was conducted by Sensei Asano (9th Dan) the most senior Japanese instructor based in the UK; so they can rest assured that they have reached a standard that they can be proud of. I take this opportunity to encourage them to continue training hard as acquiring the black belt signifies the beginning of understanding rather than the end goal. If I could remind others who are close to obtaining their Dan grade it is a requirement of the UKTKF that brown belts must have attended a minimum of 6 courses with Sensei Kawasoe prior to attempting their Shodan grading.
Attendance Credits
A reminder that the attendance incentive scheme is up and running. I will post how many credits each person has acquired at the beginning of each month. It is then up to you whether you cash them in for gifts or wait until your total is higher. Please let me know at the start of the month if you wish to claim your gift and if so what. The more regularly you train the quicker you earn credits.

Course With Sensei Dave Hazard 7th Dan
The Welsh Karate Collective are hosting a special course with Sensei Dave Hazard on 26th & 27th September at Garth Olwg Campus Gym, Pontypridd CF38 1RQ. Kyu grade training is on Sat 12:00 – 1:30pm. Brown and black belt training is on Sat 1:30 – 3:00pm & Sun 10:00 – 11:30pm &11:30 – 1:00pm. Each session costs £10. I hope that as many as possible (especially brown and black belts) take the opportunity to train with this highly experienced and respected instructor. See Mark if you require a lift over on Sunday.

Advertising
I have been approached by the police to advertise in their quarterly magazine Street Watch. I have submitted artwork and the first edition should be out in early Oct. This magazine is distributed to all the emergency services, schools and colleges throughout the Newport area and so hopefully will attract new people to the club. Please remember I offer £10 for each new person recruited to the club. I am especially keen to attract more adult members.
Equipment Purchase
I recently received £1000 funding from The Foundation Of Sports & Art. I have placed an order for 7 free standing punch bags, 12 pairs of focus mitts, and 15 foam blockers. In addition I have ordered 4 sets of competition head guards so that these are available to anyone who needs to borrow them for competitions.
UKTKF Cadet & Senior Championships
This annual event is held in Blackpool Sat 26th September. Here is the notification I received from the WTKF “Emma Hughes has kindly agreed to organise this years entries to the Cadet & Senior Championships in Blackpool, September 26th. ALL entrants will be under the WTKF "flag" rather than individual clubs. Emma would like to see a number of team entries both in the Kumite & Kata, as well as individual entries. If you would like to enter, please get back to Emma on: ems-100@hotmail.co.uk asap. Note WTKF will pay ALL entry fees as well as providing transport to the championships. Please make an effort on this one - we need to show the strength of the WTKF to the rest of the UK.”

WKGB Competition Cardiff
Despite the fact that I am on the WKGB mailing list I did not receive the competition entry forms until 31st July. The forms were accompanied by a newsletter informing me that there have been changes to the WKF competition rules. It appears that children under 14 years old are now required to wear face protection and body armour for all sparring matches. I have found a dealer who can supply at a reasonable price but alas they are out of stock. Consequently I have no alternative but to boycott the competition on 9th August. I apologize to all who were looking forward to taking part in this event. The reason I was unaware of these rule changes is because the WKGB web site has been down for the past 6 months awaiting reconstruction.
Attendance Incentive Scheme
In order to achieve high standards it is important that students train regularly. So that everyone knows where they stand I will be posting attendance figures for all members at the end of each month. Ideally each member of the club should aim to have an attendance average of 1.5 – 2 times a week. Currently there are too many members who don’t average once a week. As a way of encouraging more frequent attendance BSKC is pleased to announce a new incentive scheme. The scheme will start this month and works by rewarding each occasion a member of the club attends twice or more in any given week. For each such occasion the person will gain one credit. Credits gained will be totaled each month and can then be exchanged for a range of items and merchandise. Examples of the sorts of gifts available include:

A few people still do not have a club badge on their uniform. I’d like everyone to have one so that our club is promoted in pictures and videos, on courses and at competitions. Gold ‘Shotokan Tiger’ embroidered on black they look cool. If you need one please ask in class. Cost £4.
A Guide To Training In Karate-Do
On joining the club we ask that each member purchase a copy of the club information and training guide. This CD contains hundreds of pages of useful information, pictures and video clips. Included is the full UKTKF grading syllabus, WKF competition rules and much more. Indeed everything you need to know about training in karate from beginner to black-belt. Licence Application
The following people need to apply for their UKTKF licence and record book: Cieron Aliya, Arbaaz, Adrian, Ariel, Arlou, Daniel, Dave and Joshua. The following people need to renew their licence : Duncan, Marcus, Ben E, Dominic, Chris I, Jake, Oscar. A new licence costs £18:50 and renewal is £15. Please ensure that payment is made in the next 2 weeks otherwise I cannot guarantee that the licences will be processed in time for the next grading exam in Sept/Oct.
Student Of The Month
This month the award goes to Mark Wall. Mark has been a regular attendee since joining the club, maintaining one of the best attendance figures. Despite the steep learning curve Mark applies himself enthusiastically in every lesson.
Saturday Attendance
Attendance on Saturdays has been very low of late. I require a minimum of 8 students to make the class viable. I will recommence holding ‘Fun Days’ on a Saturday once every 2 months. These days are a mix of games and competitions with prizes for all. The first will be held on 15th August and I hope that all younger members will be able to attend.
Holiday Closure
Please note that the club will be closed on Monday 31st August for Bank Holiday as Burleigh Academy is closed on that date.
New Member Recruitment
A reminder that I offer £10 for each new member introduced to the club as long as they complete the beginners course and purchase the first set of lesson credits. I am particularly keen to recruit more adult members. I have business cards, flyers and posters available on request. Please do what you can to help out the club and earn yourself some cash in the process.

Summer Training
The response to last month’s request for details about attendance over the summer period was rather disappointing with fewer than half the club members informing me of which dates they are available to train. Consequently I am unsure if I have sufficient numbers on certain dates to open up the club. The best that I can offer is to run the club as normal and hope that a sufficient number of people attend each night. The minimum class size I can afford to run is 8 people if I have less than this number I will have to cancel the class on that night. Hopefully this will not be the case as I know that some people come a considerable distance and this would cause some inconvenience. I ask that for the period of 24th July to Sept 5th that any parent who is dropping off a child to please wait around until 15 minutes past the start time so that they can transport their child home if I have to cancel the class.
Karate Summer School
To date I have only had 4 people inform me that they would like to attend the proposed Summer School program. I require a minimum of 10 people to make this event viable. Please let me know ASAP if you wish to reserve a place. The deadline for signing up is 20th July. If I do not have sufficient numbers by this date sadly I will be forced to forgo the event.
Grading Exam Date
I had hoped to squeeze in another grading exam before the summer holidays however too many people have insufficient attendance to be eligible to grade and it is with regret that I have to postpone the exam until late Sept or early October depending on Sensei Kawasoe’s schedule.
Student Of The Month
The student of the month award for June goes to Jay Coles. Jay has been coming regularly twice weekly for many months and always turns up full of enthusiasm and willing to learn. He shows good attitude helping out around the club without being asked. Keep up the good work.
Grant Award
I just received news that my application for a grant of £1000 towards the purchase of equipment has been approved. Hopefully the cheque will not be too long in arriving. I plan to use the money to purchase a quantity of free-standing punch bags; thereby eliminating the need to be holding pads all the time.
WKGB Welsh Jnr. Championships
Your next opportunity to take part in a competitive event at the Welsh Institute for Sport is Sunday 9th August. It would be great if some of those who have not competed so far had a go as well as those with previous experience. Lets see if we can build on our medal total. I will be holding kumite and kata clinics at Friday night training. Application forms should be with us in the next week or so.
UKTKF Summer Camp
A reminder from the calendar of events that the annual UKTKF Summer Camp is being held at Herriot Watt University, Edinburgh on 21st, 22nd & 23rd August. As usual Mr. Kawasoe and other world-class sensei will be instructing. This is an opportunity not to be missed.

New Member Recruitment
We need new members to help the club grow. I persevere with advertising but there is only so much I can do single-handed. My recent attempt at putting up a sign outside Tesco was thwarted as the sign was taken down in under a week. I’ve also written to them asking that I be allowed to canvass at the store entrance. Please do what you can to recruit new members. Remember I pay £10 for each new person brought along to the club providing they stay long enough to complete the beginner’s course of 10 lessons. WKGB Competition
Many thanks to Jamie, Tyne, Connor, Caitlin, Jack, Kirsten, Marcus, Daniel W and Duncan for taking part in the recent WKGB competition. This was the largest turnout we’ve had for a competitive event and I was proud that so many represented the club and gave their best. Most of the fights went the full distance despite taking on experienced opponents. Caitlin had the day’s best performance, managing to progress through to the semi-finals and claiming a bronze medal. Hopefully we can add to this in future events. I have video clips of most fights that I am happy to burn to CD for a nominal fee. I will be posting pictures on the ‘Sensei Says’ blog along with some other bits and pieces. The WKGB only hosts 4 events each year in Cardiff. If people want to gain more experience than this offers then we will have to travel further afield. I will keep members of the club posted on any events I hear about within 100 miles of Newport..
Attendance
If people want to take grading exams at regular 4-month intervals and do well in competitions it is essential that they are training regularly. The club offers training three times per week to ensure that members have access to regular training. Monday is usually well attended but the attendance on Friday and Saturday is quite low at times. Hall hire costs a lot each month and financially I can only continue offering 3 days a week if I have sufficient numbers attending. Everyone graded green belt and above should be training a minimum of twice a week. The strength of the club relies on everyone committing to improvement. I do the best I can to offer quality in instruction, courses and competitive events but I need support on the attendance front. I have posted attendance totals for the year as well as grading eligibility totals so that each student is aware of their attendance. To date we have too few students eligible for the grading exam in July. I hope that all those with low attendance do their best to remedy this situation as the only alternative is to put back the grading date or forfeit the opportunity to grade at the next exam.
Before I decide which days to open over the summer period I am asking people to indicate which dates they are available. I would appreciate it if members could please take a minute to fill in dates on the sheet placed on the club notice board. If I have 8 or more wanting to train on a particular day I will hold training. Note that if you sign for a given day and do not attend I will debit 1 credit from your total.
Karate Summer School
I am planning to run a summer school program for all the kids in the club aged 8 and over. I did this a few years ago and it was very popular. I intend to hold this the second week of the summer holidays. The program will run Mon to Fri from 10 – 3pm each day. The summer school will involve lots of fun activities, not just karate. Some of the things I have planned are swimming, Frisbee, baseball, self-defence course, dodgeball, computer games, treasure hunt and much more. I need a minimum of 10 children to attend to make this viable. The cost for the week is £80, which compares favourably with the cost of child minding and is considerably cheaper than the £140 that Burleigh is charging for their summer school program. Full details of the program of events along with a sign-up sheet are on the club notice board. C’mon lets make this summer FUN FUN FUN!!
Sparring Protection
Safety is foremost in everyone’s minds. It appears that shin guards are a compulsory requirement in all WKF officiated competitions. I checked the rulebook and this is indeed the case. I am happy to supply red and blue guards as shown in the merchandise section of our web site. I also have a few mitts and foot protectors if anyone else wants to buy.

Student Of The Month Award
The award for May goes to Caitlin Morrison. Caitlin has been working hard to prepare for the competition and her efforts paid off with her being the first person to bring a medal back to the club. She also has the 5th highest attendance this year, proving that frequent attendance leads to high standards.
Schools Health Week
I recently visited St. Woolos school providing a ‘taster’ lesson with each year group as part of their ‘healthy living’ week. I tried to show that karate is a fun way to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Word spreads fast and I have been contacted by Liswerry primary school wanting to do the same. Hopefully we can recruit some new faces on the back of these visits.
Professor Rick Clark Seminar
Turn out for this event was disappointingly low, with only Chris, Deena and myself representing the club. I accept that we don’t have that many adult members and the timing over half-term wasn’t good but I expected everyone who said they were going to attend to be there. Professor Clark is an exceptional martial artist and one of only a few people that I know to have such extensive knowledge of kata application. I will do my best to pass on what we learnt on the day.
Licence Renewal
If I could remind the following people that their WKGB/WTKF licences expire at the end of July. Tom Brown, Nigel James, Daniel Morgan, Caitlin Morrison, Jack Price & Danielle Williams. Exam Congratulations
Well done to everyone who passed the grading exam. Sensei Kawasoe was very happy with everyone’s standard. Hopefully we will have Sensei down again in July prior to the summer holidays. If this is the case there are only 45 scheduled classes so it is very important that everyone attends regularly so they are eligible for the next exam. As a reminder the minimum attendances for grading eligibility are:

Suiyo-Kai
Thanks to Chris I, Chris M and Duncan for joining me at last month’s Suiyo-kai training with Sensei Kawasoe at his club in London. If enough people are interested we could do this again this month. Training is on Weds 20th May. We leave Burleigh at 4pm and arrive back about 11:30pm. Cost is £6 for training plus share of petrol costs.
UKTKF Spring Course
I am sorry to announce that nobody from the club attended this course. In fairness both Duncan and Oscar expressed an interest in going but the travel cost and entry fees were prohibitive. One way of keeping cost down is if we can get a group of people to go together. On this occasion there were just too few of us. If we aim to achieve the deep understanding needed to master technique and excel in karate it is essential to attend such courses.
WKGB Open Competition
I will be posting the competition sign-up sheet for the Welsh Open Championships on the club notice board as soon as I receive a copy. Note the club will be closed on this day. The deadline for signing up and payment entry fees is Monday 18th May.
We have been preparing for this event for several weeks and I hope that we can come back with some trophies. If not it is still a great experience and I am sure that you will enjoy the atmosphere and the opportunity to watch, mix and compete with Wales finest competitors. I hope that as many of you as possible will take part and represent our club. I have a limited range of sparring equipment for loan on the day. All competitors are required to wear either red or blue hand and foot protection and a gum shield. Bank Holiday & Half Term
The club will be open on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May and over half-term. Please note that the club is closed on Monday 25th May for Bank Holiday and there will be only one Tiny Tiger class on Friday 29th from 6-7pm for anyone who is around followed by the main karate class.
Professor Rick Clark Seminar
In conjunction with Sensei Ken Tucker (5th Dan) of Ao Denkou Kai, Caerphilly we shall be hosting the Welsh regional seminar with Professor Rick Clark. This will be a 4-hour masterclass on kata analysis and pressure point fighting techniques. It is a great honour to be hosting this event as Professor Clark is one of the world’s foremost authorities and only visits the U.K. twice a year. Places are limited so sign up early. Cost is £20 per person. Sorry but you have to be at least 13 years old to attend as the techniques taught are rather extreme. Event date is Sunday 24th May from 1-5pm at Burleigh Academy.

Training Fees
It has been brought to my attention that the fees calculations for 20 and 30 lessons have been incorrect for the last 9 months. The amount charged should have been £85 and £122 and not £81 and £115 as posted on the website and in reminder letters. Since this is my mistake I will accept the loss. I have now amended the totals and will charge the correct rates effective immediately.
April 2009 Newsletter
Grading Date Finalized
Many thanks for your patience in this matter. I am delighted to announce that Sensei Kawasoe will be visiting the club on Monday April 6th. As I’ve stated previously Sensei is in demand all over the world and the fact that he visits us at all is testament to the fact that he respects our small club and all who train here. Please make the effort to attend the grading practice classes I am holding from now until then. Training will commence at 6pm prompt so please arrive by 5:45pm at latest. The grading will start at approximately 7:45pm and should be over by 8:30pm.
Easter Dates
Based on the response I had from club members, I’ve made a few changes to the Easter schedule that I proposed last month. The club will be open until 6th April. We are then closed until Friday 17th April. NOTE Tiny Tigers is cancelled on Monday 6th April as we are holding training and grading with Sensei Kawasoe from 6:00 - 8:30pm. Any T.T. member that wishes to watch the training or exam is welcome to do so free of charge as long as they can sit quietly.
There will be just one Tiny Tiger class on the 17th from 6;00-7;00pm; open to anyone, regardless of which day you normally attend, followed by the main karate class at 7:15pm. We resume the normal training schedule commencing Saturday18th April. Hope you enjoy your Easter break.

I’ve attended 5 of Sensei Hazard’s courses and come away each time astonished at the man’s knowledge. It’s a great experience training with large numbers of other students and you are sure to enjoy yourself. The cost is £10 per day and lower grades can watch the advanced class for free. I will pay for any brown belt juniors and cadets that wish to attend. Let me know if you need a lift or directions.

Black Belt Magazine
My friend and long time student Joseph Claycomb who I visited last year in America has had several pictures published in Black Belt Magazine. He is seen assisting the current U.S. and Pan American Kumite Champion John Fonseca in demonstrating sparring techniques. I was at the photoshoot and the end results look great. I’ll try to get these up on the ‘Sensei Says’ blog for all to see. Joseph studied under me for 6 years whilst I was living in Bahrain. He now runs his own association and dojo in California. Student Of the Month
This month the honour goes to Oscar Sola. Oscar trains regularly and helps out with teaching Tiny Tigers as well as in the main class. He always gives 100% in his training and tries hard to incorporate what is taught in class into his karate. Well done Oscar.

Chris and I have been maintaining the web site and added a few more links to YouTube clips of Sensei Kawasoe. Our next project is to re-do pictures of club members as many of the people featured on the site no longer attend. Despite bringing a camera to the club on numerous occasions Chris and I don’t get much opportunity to take photos as we are invariably focused on teaching. If anyone would like to help out taking pictures we would much appreciate it.
We had a slight problem with somebody hijacking our site (www.burleighskc.com) and adding malware but Chris has done a great job of cleaning all the files and re-upping the site. Rest assured it is now safe to visit despite the fact that Google is still showing a warning. We have asked to them to take this down but it might take a few weeks.
Sensei Dave Hazard Course
Here is another opportunity to train with one of the best British instructors around. Sensei Hazard 7th Dan is much in demand all over the UK. He is holding a 2-day course at Bridgend Leisure Centre on 4th & 5th April. Student Of The Month Award
We are pleased to announce that Jamie Limburn has been picked as SOTM for February. Jamie tries hard in each class and has achieved a good standard of basics in the short time he has been attending the club; proving that a good attitude to training leads to rapid progress. Well done Jamie.
Club Documentary Video
I have been approached by Steve Hoozer from the University of Wales asking if we would like to feature in a documentary he is making about martial arts. I have agreed to let him come and film several classes. After editing we will upload the finished product to YouTube so that you and the web community can see what a great club we have. Filming will be on Monday nights, the first being 2nd March. Please try your best for the camera you never know who might end up watching you. WKGB Championships
The next WKGB tournament in Cardiff is set for Saturday May 23rd. I hope that many of you will consider taking part in both kata and kumite. I will be placing more emphasis on these areas in class so that everyone has a chance to practice. We already have a good standard and could do well. Either way it’s a real buzz taking part and gives you an idea of the standard at other clubs in and around Wales.

Grading Exam
Once again apologies for the delay in obtaining a date for the exam. I requested a visit back in late December but alas Sensei has been extremely busy of late and we just have to wait until he is available. Hopefully this should only be another week or two.
Windsor Course
The next brown and black belt course is being held on 16th February. Please let me know if you intend going. I have room in the car for 4 people on a first come first served basis. Once again I am happy to pay for any brown belt juniors who wish to attend just chip in £5 for petrol.
WKGB Competition
The next competition in Cardiff is scheduled for May 23rd. I know this is still quite a way off but we need to start preparing immediately after the grading so that hopefully we can bring back some medals this time. I would really like to see some of the senior grades taking part even if it’s only in the kata events.
Student Of The Month
I am happy to announce that the January SOM award goes to Marlon Clarke. Marlon has been training regularly and in particular has been paying attention to getting his stances sorted. Regular training and attention to correct form are sure ways to impress instructors so well done to him. Keep training hard, who knows it might be your turn next month.

I’ve been asked by several people how they can obtain a copy of the WTKF grading syllabus. All this information is available on the BSKC training guide CD. It also includes many video clips of how to perform basic techniques as well as all the Shotokan kata. I deal for beginners and invaluable for intermediates with hundreds of pictures and hints about how to improve performance. Making Sense Of Kata
As I’ve been trying to point out in class kata are really a series of self-defence tactics combined into a pattern so that you can remember how to deal with many types of attack. Alas most clubs teach the kata and do not go on to explain the applications of the techniques and combinations therein. One person who demonstrates kata application (oyo) very clearly is Didier Lupo. Christmas Party
Many thanks to all who supported the Xmas party. From the feedback I received it seems that all who attended had a great time. I’d like to thank parents who helped out on the day and those who wrapped gifts etc. I also owe a special thanks to Chris Malpas and Sarah Lucas for donating raffle prizes.

I hope you all had a happy and enjoyable break over the festive season. Many thanks to all who sent cards and presents I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Chris and myself take this opportunity to wish everyone associated with BSKC a happy and prosperous New Year. The karate club recommences on Saturday 10th Jan with Tiny Tigers starting back on Monday 12th January.
Starting Karate
Despite increases in hall hire charges it is my intention to keep training fees at the 2008 rate but I would appreciate it if members could encourage new people to join the club so that I can offset rising running costs and keep fees fixed for the remainder of the year.
New Year is a time when many people make commitments to starting a new activity. Maybe you would like a new challenge or would like to get fit. Many parents sit and watch class and comment on how they would like to give karate a try. Now is the perfect time to take up the challenge with an offer of free lessons throughout the remainder of January for any adult or child that would like to try out the club. Please mention this offer to friends and family on my behalf. As an incentive I offer £10 for each recommendation resulting in a new person joining the karate club. (Sorry this offer does not apply to new Tiny Tiger recruits)
Grading Exam
With only a few weeks remaining until Sensei Kawasoe’s next visit I encourage all members to train regularly in preparation for the upcoming grading exam. I have asked Sensei to come over on Monday 25th January and I am awaiting his response. Failing this date the grading will be on the first Monday he is available. If you intend to grade please make payment of £25 as soon as possible. This fee covers the training fee, examination fee, grading record sheet, and certificate. I have had to increase the cost of the grading/training fee by £5 to cover increases in hall hire fee and the fee paid to Sensei Kawasoe. Many other clubs charge in excess of £30 plus the additional cost of having to travel to take the grading on a course.
Windsor Brown & Black Belt Course
The first UKTKF course of the year is taking place in late February. Once again this is a great opportunity for brown belts to train with the best Shotokan instructors the UK has to offer. It also gives you a chance to watch the black-belt grading exams in preparation for your own exam later in the year.

Regular Training A Must
With only a few more weeks to go until the Xmas Holidays it is important that everyone trains regularly as when we recommence in January there are only 3 weeks training until the grading exam.
Christmas Party and Awards Ceremony
This years’ party will be held on Thurs 18th Dec from 5-8pm in the clubhouse at Burleigh. Expect the usual mayhem involving food, music, games, quiz, prizes. Karate Santa dusts off his costume and makes a guest appearance. Children £5, adults free. Please buy tickets in advance so that Santa knows how many gifts to bring. Please bring a small food item for the buffet
WKGB Competition
The competition set for Dec 14th has been cancelled. The reason being that the WKGB were unable to obtain the sports hall at the Wales Institute for Sport in Cardiff. I know that some of you will be disappointed but there will be plenty more opportunities next year. Holiday Dates
The last day for training this year will be Sat. 20th Dec. The club will reopen on Sat. 10th January. The reason we are closed for 3 weeks is that Sarah and her husband are taking an extended holiday abroad and Burleigh is closed in their absence.
Student Of The Year Award
This year Sensei Chris and I decided that the award for most outstanding student should go to TBA. TBA not only has the highest attendance but has also made the most improvement to his technique. He has displayed bravery on many occasions having taken some hard knocks but has never once complained or taken time-out. He is focused in class and takes the time to self-check his technique.
Sensei Kagawa DVD
Sensei Kagawa has a superb DVD titled ‘Best Karate’ This is available from the club as a short term special offer DVD for just £3. The DVD plays for just under an hour and it covers mostly kihon with some kumite and kata as well. This was only ever released in Japanese but you can learn much from watching. In my opinion Sensei Kagawa is one of the best all round karateka in the world. His basic technique is totally awesome. Believe me when I say you will want to watch this again and again.

Shotokan Karate Magazine
When it comes to karate magazines there is only one that deserves a mention and that’s SKM. John Cheetham who I know from way back has been producing this high quality mag for over 25 years. It comes out 4 times a year and is a great source of information training tips and historical facts. I am happy to order in copies at a cost of just £3 per issue if enough people wish to buy. Tiny Tigers Join The Big Boys
As I think you all know I offer an adventure martial arts class called Tiny Tigers for 5 – 7 year olds. A few people have already made the transition from T.T’s to the main class and come January several others will be moving in. Please make them feel welcome by talking with them and offering encouragement until they feel at home. Thanks.
Shihan Nishiyama Passes Away
I am sorry to announce the death of Shihan Hidetaka Nishiyama who passed away on 8th November. Shihan Nishiyama was one of the very first practitioners of Shotokan karate studying under Master Funakoshi and then Sensei Nakayama. After moving to America he established the International Traditional Karate Federation to which the WTKF is affiliated. Sensei Kawasoe is the person he chose to represent his teachings in the U.K. He will be sadly missed by the world karate community.

Training With Sensei Kawasoe

Brown & Black Belt Course
Another opportunity for all brown and black belts to train with Sensei Kawasoe plus other instructors from the UKTKF. Sunday 30th November 12:30pm Windsor Leisure Centre. The club will pay entry fee for brown belts. If you need a lift let me know but I ask you to pay £5 towards petrol.
Licence Purchase & Renewal
The following people need to apply for their licence in time for the next grading exam in January. Ben E, Dominic, Tyne, Aneurin, Ben F, Jay & Joe. A new licence costs £18.50, renewal is £15. Payment needs to be with me by Monday 24th November so that I can send off the applications in time.
Student Of The Month
The SOM award for October goes to Caitlin Morrison. Caitlin trains regularly and always turns up to class full of enthusiasm and ready to train hard. She has made excellent progress since starting 6 months ago and has already set her sights on entering the next WKGB competition in Dec.
Training Tip
The key to continuous improvement is to constantly check your current form. Each lesson your instructor will offer lots of good advice aimed at improving your skill and level of performance. Learning karate is a slow repetitious process with instructors making the same points again and again. Despite all the good advice offered the rate of individual progress is down to one simple rule…. how often do you check yourself in class? If the instructor asks you to keep your front knee bent during front stance…. how long is it before you have forgotten the advice and gone back to what you were doing previously? Students that check themselves regularly are likely to adopt good form much faster than those who don’t. I still see many examples of black belts that have poor form and this is mainly due to the fact that they rarely analyse what and how they are performing a given technique. The only person that can really make a difference to how well you do karate is you and it’s also your decision as to whether you take 6 weeks, 6 months or 6 years to get a technique correct. If your instructor has to tell you to pay attention to the same point more than once in class then you are not really focussing your attention enough on this point and need to address the issue. Why not make a point of starting to check your form regularly from the next class you attend…. after all it is you who will benefit the most from doing so.

Exam Congratulations
Well done to everyone who recently passed their grading exam. Sensei Kawasoe was again very happy with everyone’s standard. We can look forward to having him down again in January so please continue to attend regularly so that you are eligible for the next exam. As a reminder the minimum attendances for grading eligibility are:
· 9th Kyu (red belt) = 10 sessions
· 8th kyu (orange belt) & 7th kyu (yellow belt) = 15 sessions
· 6th kyu (green belt) & 5th kyu (purple belt) = 20 sessions
· 4th Kyu (purple/white belt) & 3rd kyu (brown belt) = 25 sessions
· 2nd kyu (brown) & 1st Kyu (brown/white) = 25
· 1st Dan (black) 50 sessions plus attendance at 6 training sessions with Sensei Kawasoe
There are approximately 50 training sessions until the next grading. To guarantee passing the exam at a high standard everyone should try and attend twice-weekly and even more frequently if graded green belt or above. Sadly 10 people missed out this time round due to insufficient attendance. Well done to Daniel Williams for picking up the attendance award. If you are wondering why he is getting so good, so quickly this is the reason.
Payment Thanks
Many thanks to everyone for the prompt payment of fees, licence renewals etc. I hope that everyone is happy with the new fee structure. It certainly works out cheaper and fairer for all. If you have any comments or concerns please bring them to my attention.
Half-Term Holiday
The club will be closed on Friday 31st October seeing as it is both half-term and the eve of Halloween and I don’t think that many people will be attending.
Student Of The Month Award
The student of the month award for September goes to Daniel Payne. Daniel has been trying hard to improve his standard and consequently performed very well in the grading. The key to improvement is to train often, keep listening to what Chris and myself are asking you to do and remembering to keep checking important points like stance, hips and shoulders. Whose turn will it be next month? Sensei Chris and myself are watching so I hope everyone tries hard to be ‘top dog’.

Could anyone who doesn’t have a club badge please buy one. The badge is a symbol of our unity and we should all be proud to wear it. Wearing the badge also promotes our club on courses and competitions allowing others to recognize which club our (excellent) students come from. Cost £4.

Halloween Party
Calling all ghouls, ghosts and undead. Burleigh will be celebrating a night of fright on Sun. 2nd Nov. (4:00 – 8:00pm) with its annual Fancy Dress Halloween Party; including the “Burleigh Thriller Show” Come as your favourite monster or fiend. Tickets cost just £4. Please bring some party food for the buffet table.
Kool Karate Site
I frequently scour the internet looking for good karate sites. Here is one I found recently. http://www.downloadkarate.com/ It has hours of videos to stream; all that is required is that you enter a valid email address. I agree with most of what the instructor in these videos has to say. They train in Shito-ryu but don’t let that put you off as they stress the ‘Shotokan Way’ of doing things in most clips. Beginners and indeed senior students should watch the clips for beginners (ignore what he says about ‘height of hand on hip’ other than that it’s all good).
Sensei Wayne Otto (7th Dan) Course
Sensei Wayne Otto is one of the world’s most experienced fighters with seven European championships and nine world titles to his name. So who better to learn kumite from. Senior grades especially, should consider attending his courses as they aim at a level beyond what I can teach. Sensei Otto is holding a course in Barry on Sunday Oct 19th for those interested. (see poster on notice board for more details). I will be attending this course if anyone requires a lift there and back.
Training With Sensei Kawasoe
Chris and I will be traveling to London on Wednesday 29th Oct to attend Sensei’s Suiyo-Kai class. Anyone wishing to come along is more than welcome. Please note that we have to leave at 4pm to ensure arriving in time. Class is from 7:00 – 8:30pm. We head back straight after and should arrive back in Newport by 11pm. Cost £5 for petrol and £6 training fee. Please remember that ALL students require 6 training sessions with Sensei to be eligible for their black belt exam.
WKGB Competition
The next WKGB competition in Cardiff is set for Sunday 21st December. It would be great to see as many people from the club taking part as last time (if not more). I will place a sign up sheet on the notice board nearer the time but start thinking about entering as I need to know who is keen to train for this.

Sensei Phil Dutton
I attended Sensei Phil Dutton’s funeral at Wrexham Crematorium last month and paid respects on behalf of myself and the club. His memory will live on through his teaching.

New Fees Structure
Since proposing the new payment scheme last month the few comments I received were all in favour of changing to the new system. Consequently I will be introducing this from the start of this month. Here are the options and rules in case you missed them last month.
10 lessons @ £4.50 per lesson (0% discount) = £45
20 lessons @ £4:27 per lesson (5% discount) = £81
30 lessons @ £4.05 per lesson for (10% discount) = £115
40 lessons @ £3.83 per lesson (15% discount) = £153
To help spread the cost, payments for lessons can be made over 2 months.
Rules Of The Credit System
· Individual members are required to purchase a minimum of 10 lessons.
· A family of 2 are required to purchase a minimum of 20 lessons to be divided as you wish.
· Family groups of 3 or more are required to purchase 30 or 40 lessons, to be divided as you wish.
· Non-family members cannot club together and divide up credit.
· Students that leave the club before using up all their credit will receive NO refund however I will allow family members to pass on any remaining credit should a member of their family leave the club whilst the remainder continue to train.
· Credits cannot be used on special courses or training and grading with Sensei Kawasoe. Such events are charged separately.
· Individual students and family groups will be reminded to purchase more credit when a few lessons
· Credit must be used within a 6-month period from date of purchase.
· New members will be charged per lesson for the duration of their beginner’s course and then asked to join the club by opting into the credit system.
Licence Renewals
The following people have their UKTKF licence expire at the end of the month: Duncan, Alexander, Ben E., Dominic, Chris, Chayce, Oliver, Harry, Josh, Robert, Liam, Ryan, Jake. I would also like Steve, Markus, Kirsten & Oscar to apply for their first licence. Please see me for an application form which should be completed and returned with payment by the end of the month. First licence costs £18.50 and renewal is £15.
Grading Exam
I am still awaiting confirmation from Mr. Kawasoe for Monday 15th Sept. If this date is not available the exam will be held the following Monday. Training will start at 6pm and the grading exam will start at approximately 7:45pm and will conclude 9pm at latest. If you do not intend to grade or were not eligible this time around your next opportunity will be in February. I ask that all club members attend the training session with Sensei Kawasoe. Cost of training and grading is £20, training alone is £10. Please hand in your grading record books and payment ASAP.
Changes To Training Times
In order to fit in with Burleigh Academy’s new timetable the Saturday class will now run from 12:30 – 2:00pm. In response to requests from several club members Friday night training will recommence at the start of this month. The class will be from 7:15 – 8:45pm. I require a regular attendance of at least 8 students to ensure this is ongoing. Ideally students over yellow belt should be attending twice-weekly and hopefully this will make it a little easier for those folk with hectic social lives to attend regularly.
Competition Winners
It was a shame that only 4 people entered the website quiz. After drawing the names from a hat Brachyn and Nigel were the winners and have the choice of either a DVD or T Shirt as their prize. Well done to you both.
In Memorial
I am sorry to announce that Sensei Phil Dutton (7th Dan) has passed away. Phil was my instructor for the 6 years I ran a club in Bahrain and from whom I received my Nidan grade. I owe a debt of gratitude for all the knowledge he passed to me. Karateka and family alike will sadly miss him.

Friday Training To Resume
Several people have expressed a desire to resume Friday night training. I am happy to add an extra session providing that attendance is sufficient. Therefore from September 5th you will be able to attend each Friday from 7:15 – 8:45pm. Hopefully this will alleviate the situation of people not having sufficient training sessions to be eligible for their grading exam. Those of you who are close to the minimum attendance for grading should take advantage of these extra sessions so that you have a better chance of obtaining a full pass rather than a temporary one.
New Payment Structure
From September I am proposing a new credit system for payment in which individuals or families will buy a block of lessons that are held as a credit record and each time a training session is attended one credit will be subtracted from their total. This new system will ensure that club members only pay for the lessons attended. Other advantages of this system are that family groups of 2 or more will now receive a discount, as will any members that want to train regularly by purchasing one of the larger credit packages. I have tried to organize payments so that families are not paying much more than the current system e.g. a family that has two children training once-weekly currently pays £40 each month. Under the new system they can pay £81 in one payment or spread the cost over 2 months. Members are required to purchase blocks of lessons from the following options:

Sorry no training on Mon August 25th as it is a Bank Holiday and Burleigh Academy is closed.
Student Of The Month Award
The award this month goes to Connor Morris. Connor has the third highest attendance in the club since the grading in March and was eager to represent the club at the WKGB Junior Open Championships in Cardiff on August 3rd. This is the sort of enthusiasm and commitment that earns the respect of Sensei Chris and myself. Well done Connor. Due to the fact that there are only 3 training sessions in August the next award will be at the end of September so you all have an excellent opportunity to impress the club instructors and make yourself the star performer.
Sparring Protection
Several people still have no sparring protection. It is important that all students have hand and foot protection not only to keep themselves safe but also the people they are sparring with. As we do more sparring I am mindful that people are picking up injuries that in many cases could be avoided or lessened. I have a very limited number of pads that I can lend out i.e. one or two pairs of each size. It may be the case that if students aren’t padded up (as has been happening of late) then those students will have to sit out that part of the lesson. The club sells quality protection competitively priced both WKF Competition approved and also a cheaper alternative. Please visit the Merchandise section of our web site for details. Those students that already have protection MUST bring pads to each lesson.

It has come to my attention that members and parents forget that they can access club news and events on the BSKC website from the NEWS and CALENDAR sections. Chris and I try to ensure that all the web pages are updated regularly and new content added. If you haven’t yet book marked the site please type www.burleighskc.com into your web browser and add the page to your favourites so that you can always find us even if you cannot remember the address. As an incentive to visit I have compiled a short quiz using information from the web site. I will place all the correct entries sent by email into a hat and make the draw mid month. Grading Date

Summer Training
I will be running the club just one day a week on Monday for the duration of the summer holidays. Because people are away on and off you can pay monthly as usual or for the lessons trained over this period.
New Payment Structure
In order to make payment fairer for all. I have been toying with the idea of changing the payment structure for lessons From September I will be introducing a credit system where each member commits to purchasing a block of lessons. Each time you attend class I will deduct 1 lesson from your total. I will keep a record of all attendance and inform students when they have 5 credits left. This system means that you can train as often as you wish and only pay for the days you attend. The only conditions are that members must stay in credit and no refund will be issued if people decide to leave before they have used up their credit. The minimum purchase is 20 lessons. As before I offer a discount scheme for those who attend regularly. A 20-lesson block will cost £90 (£4.50 per lesson). A 30-lesson block will cost £120 (£4.00 per lesson) and a 5- lesson block £175 (£3.50 per lesson) To help spread the cost, payment can be made over two months. If you have any comments regarding this proposal please inform me of your views ASAP.
Friday Night Training
I have been approached by several members of the club who would like to resume training on Friday. Providing that a sufficient number of people (10 minimum) are willing to attend I am happy to offer an extra class each week. I will start this class in September and see how it goes.
Student Of The Month Award
The award this month goes to Duncan Abraham. Duncan trains regularly and tries hard to improve despite minor injuries. BSKC recognizes his dedication and enthusiasm for the art and I take this opportunity to thank him for his help with new students.
Sensei Kawasoe Book

Summer Courses
As per the calendar Sensei is holding a 3-day course at Herriot Watt University (Edinburgh) on 29th 30th and 31st August. I can supply details for anyone interested in attending.
Welsh Open Championships
Once again I invite all interested parties to attend this competition at the Welsh Institute For Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The event is planned for Sunday August 3rd. Please sign up on the club notice board for the categories you wish to enter. Transport can be arranged for anyone who requires it on the day.
Licence Purchase and Renewal
All members of BSKC must hold a current UKTKF licence in order to be eligible for grading with Sensei Kawasoe. I require payment by July 28th so that I can ensure that your application is processed prior to the grading in Sept. The cost of a first time licence is £18.50. Summer Training
I am asking all members to let me know if they wish to continue training over the summer holiday period. I am more than happy to carry on with classes if demand is sufficient. But it might be that I run the club just one day a week. Please let me know if you will be around and which days you prefer either Monday, Saturday or both. You can let me know by email or signing the sheet on the club notice board. Thanks.
Friday Night Training
I have been asked by a few people about the possibility of returning to 3 classes a week. Friday night is available from 7:15 – 8:45pm. If demand is sufficient I am happy to add this to the schedule. Please let me know if this interests you.
May Student Of the Month
I am constantly looking to see who is trying hard to make most improvement in class and once again I have been very impressed with the attitude of Daniel Williams who trains regularly twice a week and gives maximum effort at all times. Consequently he is making rapid progress. Well done Daniel. So who will be SOTM in June? Keep trying hard and remember I’m always watching.
North Wales Open Championships
Sorry we didn’t’ attend this event. In the end it was just a little too far away and inconvenient and understandably few people wanted to make the effort. The next event is in Cardiff Sunday August 3rd and we shall definitely be entering a squad.
Grading Exam Date
As you are aware the grading exam should have taken place in July, however with the club’s recent commitment to coaching competition karate I have not focussed as much time as I require to prepare people for the next grade. Emphasis will now continue on preparing all students for the grading exam scheduled for mid September.
Sports Village Open Day
The Sports Council for Wales is hosting an Open Day at the Sport’s Village (Spytty) on Sunday 13th July. Sport’s Clubs from all over Newport have been invited to put on demonstrations and hold trial classes. If you would like to help out and get some extra training (for free) your support would be much appreciated. I have divided the day’s events into time slots so that you can volunteer as little or much time as you feel you want to commit. This could be a good opportunity to grow the club and bring in new members. Please do all you can to help out, it should be a lot of fun. Thanks.

May 2008 Newsletter
May Bank Holidays
Burleigh Aademy will be closed for Bank Holidays on Monday May 3rd and 26th Training fees for those that train on Monday only will be £9 this month. If you train on Saturday only the fee is unchanged at £20. If you train twice-weekly the monthly training fee will be £23.
WKGB Closed Championships
I have been informed that this event has been postponed from May 3rd due to the fact that this date clashed with the European Championships. I will inform club members of the new date as soon as it’s rescheduled. On a positive note it gives us a few more weeks to prepare. Please try to attend training on both Monday and Saturday if you are thinking of competing as each class is being used for preparation.
Sparring Protection
As we do more sparring it is inevitable that there will be some injuries due to accidental contact. In order to minimize the risk of any injury I must insist that ALL students who do not currently have sparring equipment purchase hand and foot protection and bring these to each lesson. To help with the cost I am offering discounted prices on all protective merchandise for THIS MONTH ONLY.
I am offering two different qualities of protection to suit your budget. The cheaper option is to purchase the white elasticated mitts and shin/instep protectors. These are adequate for use in the club, however they are not sufficiently padded for competitions. The second option is to buy the blue/red polyurethane hand mitts and foot protectors with optional shin guards. These are more expensive but they do provide excellent protection. To view the full range look under ‘merchandise’ on the club web site or ask to view samples before or after class. I will have attached an order form so that I know how many of each type to order in. Orders placed before May 6th will be discounted by 10%.
Student Of The Month Award
Seeing as there was no award last month I have selected two students this month. If I might reiterate that the award is in recognition of attitude and determination to improve rather than who has the greatest skill level. This month Sensei Chris and myself have been impressed by the regular twice-weekly attendance and fighting spirit of Chayce Jeffries and Daniel Williams. In addition to their certificates they will also get their pick of prizes from the selection provided. Chris and I both hope that everyone will try hard to win this award next month. We are always impressed by students who support the club and events such as courses and competitions.
Club Badges
I have had another lot of badges produced whilst I was in the U.S. These are better quality than the originals but also cost me more to get manufactured. Therefore I am obliged to sell these at a little more but I hope you will agree that they are still good value at just £4 each. It is hoped that ALL members of the club will wear their badge with pride.
Suit For Sale
I bought a new suit whilst in the States and now have one surplus to my requirements. If anyone would like a part-worn, quality suit, about size 3 complete with badge let me know. It still has several years wear left in it. It cost £50 new and is up for grabs for just £10.
Monday Nights
After some consideration I have decided to offer the additional training on Monday’s to students graded 4th kyu as well as brown belts. Please do your best to attend. So far brown belt attendance has only been 50%, I expected better!
Spring Course With Sensei Kawasoe
Attendance at the Spring Course was disappointing with only Chris, Alex and myself attending. I remind brown belts that they must have attended a minimum of 6 courses with Sensei so that he knows who you are and what you are capable of. This is also a mandatory requirement for Dan grading. The next opportunity to train with Sensei is at his club on Wednesday 14th May, let Chris or myself know if you require a lift.
Rick Clark Seminar
Many thanks to Chris, Duncan, Jake and Ben for supporting this event. As always it was a great seminar with plenty of laughs to go along with the pain. In total we had 16 people attend. Many form other clubs were very complimentary about our club and the facilities. hopefully we can host this event again on Mr Clark’s next visit to the UK. Chris and I have talked with Ken Tucker about doing some training at his dojo in Caerphilly as an interim arrangement.

Welcome Back & Congratulations
Congratulations to all who passed the grading. Sensei Kawasoe was once again very happy with the standard of all the students of BSKC. Have a nice break over Easter then come back ready to knuckle down to hard training again. I was very pleased to see that so many of you opted for twice-weekly training in the months leading up to the exam. To be honest this is the only way that you can make the required improvement from one grading to the next. I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible continue to train regularly twice a week. For your information I am detailing the minimum number of training sessions required for eligibility for your next grading. You might want to keep your own record so that you know if you are on schedule. The next exam is scheduled for mid July.
Grade being aimed at:
* 9th Kyu (red belt) 10 sessions * 8th kyu (orange belt) & 7th kyu (yellow belt) 15 sessions * 6th kyu (green belt) & 5th kyu (purple belt) 20 sessions * 4th Kyu (purple/white belt) & 3rd kyu (brown belt) 25 sessions * 2nd kyu (brown) & 1st Kyu (brown/white) 25 sessions and attendance at Sensei Kawasoe's club or Brown/Black belt course on at least one occasion.
Extended Training On Monday Night
I am aware that the senior grades require more advanced training and for various reasons it is not always possible for me to organize the class and teach all I would like. I therefore propose to extend the Monday class to 8:30pm. The last half hour will be exclusively for brown and black belts. I will use the extra 30 minutes to teach new kata, kata bunkai, kumite and advanced techniques in preparation for black belt. There is no charge for the extra tuition but I’ll expect those concerned to attend regularly. As an extra treat, I have been contacted by Stephen Marriott, who is a 3rd Dan Instructor with the SKI. He will be acting as guest instructor throughout April on Mondays, getting people ready for the upcoming competition in May, amongst others things.
Prof Rick Clark Seminar
I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Wales component of Prof. Rick Clark's UK visit. This will be on Saturday 12th April from 1:30 - 6:30pm. I have invited senior students from all over Wales so hopefully this event will be well attended. For those of you that don't know Mr. Clark is very adept at kyusho-jutsu (pressure point fighting) and uses his many years of experience to demonstrate the defensive aspects of kata as applicable to street fighting and attack. I sincerely hope that brown belts and adults will be able to attend. The cost is £20.
UKTKF Spring Course
Each year the UKTKF organizes two extended training camps in April and August. The Spring Camp is scheduled for April 25th 26th and 27th April in Windsor just 2 hours drive from Newport. I remind brown belts that they MUST have attended 6 courses with Sensei as a pre-requisite for attempting their black belt. So that paying for attendance is not an issue I will use what I have left of the Community Chest Fund money I received from the Sports Council to pay for 1 day’s training costs for any brown belt. To further reduce expense I am prepared to drive down on each of the 3 days. All I ask is a contribution to petrol and your commitment to attend. The course instructors include Sensei Kawasoe, Sensei Naito and Sensei Tsuyama (Sensei Kawasoe’s instructor) This will be 3 days of sheer brilliance and I encourage anyone serious about their karate to try and attend one or more of the days.
Weekend Course With Sensei Dave Hazard 7th Dan
Open weekend course Sat 5th & Sun 6th April in Pencoed, Bridgend, cost £5 per day. If I'm not too jet lagged I will be attending. Let me know if you need a lift over.
Training With Sensei Kawasoe
I will be heading down to London again on Wednesday 16th April for the once monthly Suiyo-kai. I invite anyone who would like to attend to travel down with me as I'd like some company on the trip. I leave at 4:30pm and we should be back by 11:45pm. Training costs £6 plus £5 towards petrol.
WKGB Competition
The next WKGB competition is being held in Cardiff on Saturday 3rd May. I hope to take as many competitors as I can down on the day. I will be concentrating most of the class time training for this event between now and then. Further details and sign up are on the club notice board. The last day for entry and payment is April 28th.

My Karate Origins
As some of you know I started karate in Denton near Manchester, aged 12, after a leaflet was posted through the door. My instructor then was Dennis Tilley. I’m happy to say he and the club are still going strong today. Sensei Kawasoe Book
Sensei has a biographical book coming out soon. As you know he is a private individual about whom not a lot is known. This book gives a privileged insight into his early years in karate from when he started up to graduating from the JKA instructors class and beyond. Extra Training Sessions In Preparation For Grading
I will be holding one extra session on Thurs 6th March from 6:30 – 8:00pm for those who wish to attend. This is your penultimate chance to polish your performance. Cost is £4 payable on the night. Reminder that the class on Monday 10th with Sensei Kawasoe starts at 6pm prompt so please turn up no later than 5:45pm.
February’s Student Of The Month
Congratulations go to Oliver Josty for being the first person to obtain the SOTM Award. The qualities Chris and I most admired were perseverance with getting his kata correct, improvement in kicking and a determination to keep his stance low. We are looking closely to see who is going to be this April’s winner so please keep making the effort. Remember that it is more about attitude and trying hard than simply being the best although we are always impressed by personal performance.
A Busy February
Last month was fairly hectic. It started Feb 3rd when Alex, Jake and myself attended a brown and black belt course with Sensei Kawasoe in Bisham Abbey. On the 9th & 10th Chris and I attended a 12-hour Sports Medic course during which we both renewed our first aid qualifications. On the 13th Chris and I visited Sensei’s club in London. Finally on the 28th Chris and I attended a Child Protection and Safety course. Hopefully you will see from this that we take the running of the club seriously and are constantly striving to improve standards and live up to our club motto of “Being The Best”.
March Fees & Easter Holidays
After such a busy February I think I deserve a break and so I’m off to California to spend time with my friend and former student Yousif Claycomb. Yousif trained under me for 6 years during my time in Bahrain and is now a 4th Dan instructor and has his own club in Pasadena. We shall be doing some training together and also going to Las Vegas to watch the U.S. Open Karate Championships. The club will therefore be closed for Easter. The last session this month will be Mon. 17th March and we will re-open on Sat. 5th April. Training fees for March are half the usual price.
Karate Blog Site
I’ve started up my own karate blog called “Sensei Says”; the point of which is to create a diary in which I can post articles about technique and personal improvement along with pictures and video clips. So far I’ve posted articles about Ushiro Geri (back kick) as well as a compilation of training tips. Over the Easter Holidays I will also be posting pictures from the USA so that you can see what I’m getting up karate wise whilst over there. Video Critique And Action Plans
I have been spending time with some of you reviewing your performance in class and drawing up “Action Plans” to help you improve. Please do your very best to work on the suggestions I have made as this is the quickest way to success and it will stop bad habits developing.
Training With Sensei Kawasoe
If I can remind senior students that in order to be eligible for your black belt exam you must have attended 6 courses with Sensei Kawasoe. Your next opportunity is at his club on Wed 16th April, as I will again be traveling down. If you can’t make this date you might wish to attend some or all of the Windsor Spring Camp on April 25th, 26th & 27th. This year it looks as if Senseis’ Tsuyama, Naito & Kawasoe Sensei will be present. I will post more details as I get them.
WKGB Championships
I would encourage ALL members of the club to take part in the upcoming WKGB Championships in Cardiff on Sat 3rd May. We have a good standard in both kata and kumite and participants have a better than average chance of doing well. I will post the respective categories as soon as I have details. However you should let me know as soon as possible if you intend to compete so that I know who to give supportive coaching to prior to the event.

Grading Exam
The next grading exam has been set for Monday 10th March. There will be a 90 min training session with Sensei Kawasoe starting 6:00pm. The grading will start at approximately 7:45pm and we should be finished by 9:00pm. If you do not intend to grade this time around the next opportunity will be in July but I ask that you still attend the training session as the knowledge and teaching ability of Sensei is too good to miss out on. Cost of training and grading is £20, training alone is £10.Please hand in your grading record books ASAP.Payment is due by the end of February.
Training with Sensei Kawasoe
I have been looking into training more frequently with Sensei Kawasoe. To this end I have found details of his club in London and will try to attend bi-monthly. If any brown or black belt wishes to travel over with me you are most welcome. He holds a special Surakai class on at least one Wednesday each month. We will have to leave Newport at 4:30pm and should be back by midnight. The next Surakai is scheduled for February 13th.
The next brown and black belt course with Sensei Kawasoe is being held on Sunday 3rd February in Bisham Abbey approximately 115 miles east of Newport and easy to get to if you have a car. I can provide a lift for those who are keen to go. See Mark for more details.
Student Of The Month Award
I have decided to give an award each month to the student who in the opinion of the instructors has made a special effort or who has excelled in some area of karate, not necessarily then person in the club who is the best but the person we think has a good attitude to training and is putting in the effort to improve. Some examples of what we are looking for are: students who train extra hard in class or are constantly checking their technique and striving for improvement. It might be that you have been working hard at home to get a kick or combination working well and you can demonstrate this in training or you have mastered your grading kata to a high standard. The award will take the form of a certificate and a prize of your choice such as a DVD, club T-shirt, sparring gloves etc.
Joint Training with Sensei Griffiths Club
Every Monday from now on we will be joined by members of Sensei Dave Griffith’s club. Hopefully this will raise the energy of the training sessions and inspire lower grades to emulate their standard. Please take the opportunity to make them feel welcome and ask them for help and advice as between them they have plenty of experience.
Instructor Courses
As part of the clubs ongoing commitment to the safety and protection of its members Chris and myself will be attending two courses in February. The first is a 2-day Sports Medic First Aid Course. The second is a Child Protection and Safety course. These are mandatory requirements for instructors of clubs affiliated to the Welsh Karate Governing Body as we are.

YouTube Martial Arts Videos
As most of you are aware YouTube has thousands of videos that cover all aspects of karate. This is a great resource if you want to view kata, kata bunkai, competition karate or Shotokan Masters in action. Try typing in names of kata or instructors. Training Tip
This months tip focuses on repetition versus correctness of technique. You have all heard the expression “practice makes perfect” On one level this is true. Perhaps this phrase should be modified to “practicing perfection leads to perfection” Simply repeating exercises without any thought or attention to detail doesn’t always produce the results you want. Indeed it can be counterproductive as incorrect practice leads to bad habits that become ingrained and are then difficult to correct. It’s much better to practice a technique as well as you possibly can 10 times rather than repeating it 1000 times incorrectly. My job as an instructor is to try and make you understand the mechanics of techniques i.e. the subtle ways that you can move your body so that you can get more speed and power etc. Your job is to concentrate on what your body is doing in class so that you progress as quickly as possible. The problem is that often there is simply too much to concentrate on. So try to pick one or two points for each class and just work on that. For example you might say to yourself…”Today….this week…this month, I am going to try and keep my stance low to the ground or ensure that my back foot faces as much forwards as I can get it in front stance.” If you do this regularly and keep checking during the class this action will eventually become automatic so that you don’t have to check so frequently. This then leaves you free to focus on some other aspect of your training and in this way you make progress. It goes without saying that I cannot do this part for you. If you want to achieve more rapid progress you have to be responsible for your own development.

Happy New Year
Many thanks to those of you who sent cards and gifts. Rest assured I had a Merry Xmas (and lots of empty bottles) I have pleasure in welcoming you back after the festivities I hope you all had a happy and relaxing break and that the New Year is filled with prosperity for all. Hopefully the start of the New Year will add an incentive to start training hard again as the grading exam is only about 8 weeks away!
Birthday Celebrations
The club is 3 years old on 21st January I shall be bringing in cake on this date. Don’t miss out.
End Of Year Awards
Congratulations to all who did well in the kata competition before Xmas. Many thanks to Chris Ben and Jake for all their help and support in helping me run the club throughout 2007. Special congratulations go to Alex Allman who was this years recipient of the Student Of The Year award for his regular attendance, perseverance and willingness to attend courses and competitions.
Video Coaching
Santa kindly slipped a video camera under my tree. I will be using this to film individuals in class. My hope is to transfer clips to DVD so that you can critique your own performance at home to help you make further improvement. I also hope to sit down and view footage with individuals as extra help prior to grading.
New Students Needed

Karate Kid
As some of you are aware I started karate aged 12. At the time video cameras were not around and so I have little visual record of that time. My father recorded a tiny bit of me doing karate on cine film. I am in the process of transferring this to DVD so that anyone who wants can have a good laugh at how pathetic I was back then.

WKGB Open Competition
Hats off to Alex and Daniel who fought in this tournament. Unfortunately they did not make the winners rostrum but I am proud of them for having the courage to take part. Better luck next time.
Club Kata Competition
The in-house kata competition is being held on Sat 1st Dec. 12:00- 1:30pm. This is a good opportunity to practice using the same format and rules as those used in tournament karate so that you’ll know the score should you wish to take part in one at a later date. Entry is divided into green belts and below and purple belts and above. I’m using a round robin system so everyone will get a fair crack at impressing the judges. There are medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category. Entry is free so please try to support this event with your presence.
Xmas Party and Awards Ceremony
The Xmas Party will be held on Sun 16th Dec from 5:00 – 8:00pm. The evening will consist of party games, music, food and drink. Karate Santa will make a special appearance and will be handing out gifts to all who attend. The evening will culminate in an awards ceremony where we celebrate the achievements of those in attendance. I will be handing out certificates and presenting the Student Of The Year Award. Tickets cost £4 per child which includes admission fee, gift and entry into the raffle (parents entry is free) If I could ask each of you to help out by bringing some party food, I’ll supply the rest. Hopefully I can count on the support of parents to help with setting up, games and clearing away.

I recently attended this Brown and Black Belt Course. As always, with Sensei teaching it was interesting and insightful. I would like to thank Alex, Ben, Dominic and Jake for their support in attending with me. From what I saw of the Black belt gradings for kids their age they don’t have far to go.
December Fees & Holiday Closure
The last training session this year will be on Sat 21st of December. Seeing as this is a short month I will only be charging £15 for once-weekly or £24 for twice-weekly training. Please take this opportunity to train as it’s a few weeks before we start up again next year. Many thanks to Chris who has promised to make it a fun event. I will be at home in Manchester keeping my mum company for Xmas. The club starts back with karate on Saturday 5th Jan. and Tiny Tigers on Fri 11th Jan
Fees for 2008
There will be no change to the fees for the first half of 2008. I hope this will encourage you all to train as frequently as you can. For green belt or higher that should be twice-weekly so that I can impart all the knowledge and skills needed to achieve a good standard.
January Recruitment
I am having an advertising drive in January in an attempt to recruit much-needed members to the club. If I could ask all concerned with the club to mention it to friends, school and work mates etc that would be greatly appreciated. As an added incentive I am happy to pay £5 for each recommendation that results in a new member joining the club. Come on folks make yourselves some easy money!

Grading Congratulations
Well done to everyone who passed the grading exam. Sensei Kawasoe and I were very pleased with the standard displayed by all. Please take note of the comments on your grading report as they reflect directly the notes that Sensei made during your examination. The next grading examination should be at the end of February or early March. Here is a reminder of the minimum attendance need to be eligible for the next grading. There are approximately 35 training sessions between now and the exam. People aiming for 6th kyu and above will not be eligible with just once-weekly training. Purple belts and above should be committed to twice-weekly training for most of this period.
Grade being aimed at :-
9th Kyu (red belt) 10 sessions
8th kyu (orange belt) & 7th kyu (yellow belt) 15 sessions 6th kyu (green belt) & 5th kyu (purple belt) 20 sessions 4th Kyu (purple/white belt) & 3rd kyu (brown belt) 25 sessions 2nd kyu (brown) & 1st Kyu (brown/white) 25 sessions plus a commitment to teaching lower grade students on a minimum of 5 occasions.Dates for November

Here is your chance to compete against other members of the club and see how you rate. The competition is in 2 categories green belts and below and purple belts and above. Both events are based on a round robin so that you get a chance to compete against all other members of your division. There will be medals and certificates for 1st 2nd and 3rd places in each division. Entry is free but please sign up if you want to take part.

Here you will find a detailed biography and his contribution to Shotokan karate along with links to video clips. We also aim to have a club blog site that showcases the talents and achievements of those involved in the club along with pictures, articles and more. Sensei Kawasoe will be visiting Burleigh on the 29th Octber for the purpose training and grading. Training will commence at 5:30pm and those attending are asked to arrive at the club by 5:00pm.

Grading Exam
I have finally managed to arrange a date for the next grading exam. Sensei Kawasoe has agreed to come down on either Mon 29th or Tues 30th October. There will be a 90 min pre-grading training session starting at either 5:30pm or 6:00pm followed by the grading exam. It is hoped that ALL club members will support the club and train with Sensei even if they are not grading on this occasion. Tiny Tiger ‘red belts’ are invited to train also, all others are welcome to watch. The cost of training is £10. The grading exam will be an additional £10. Everyone who intends to grade must be in possession of a current WTKF licence. Please make payment and hand in your UKTKF record book by 20th October. I will confirm the exact time and date as soon as I have this but please try to keep both dates free. Those grading might want to consider twice weekly training for this month, if you don’t already allowing you to polish your technique and improve your chances of a full pass.
Kawasoe DVD
I still have a few copies of Sensei’s superb instructional DVD in which he demonstrates techniques from basic through to advanced. A must for any serious student. The DVD includes all the kata needed up to black belt along with many tips on how to get the most out of your training. Running time 135 mins for just £5. Why not treat yourself to a copy?
BSKC Training Guide
I think that most of you already have this disc. If not could I please ask you to consider purchasing a copy. The CDR has over 180 pages of information, covering everything you need to know about Shotokan Karate; including hundreds of tips and many illustrations. All the grading syllabi are on this disc but if you would like a printed version for the grade you are attempting I will make these available also.
Halloween Party
As has become traditional BSKC holds its annual Halloween Party in conjunction with other Burleigh Academy attendees on Sun 28th Oct from 5:00 – 9:00pm, cost just £4 payable on the door. It’s a great evening of ghoulish games, monster music, nightmarish nibbles and scary surprises (please bring a little something for the buffet). All Karate, Tiny Tiger members and parents are welcome; please try to attend in fancy dress.
Training Tip
The key to effective technique is speed and power. The faster you can move arms and legs the more power you will be able to get into your kicks, punches and blocks. Speed is obtained by concentrating on two basic elements, one being effort. It might help if you try to imagine hitting an imaginary opponent standing in front of you as hard as you can. Next imagine that they can move away really quickly so that you have to move very fast to catch them before they are out of range. The second important element is relaxation. As you try harder there is a tendency to tense up, especially in the shoulders. For punches and blocks, imagine that you are trying to catch a fly with your hand as it flies around the room. Your best chance of achieving this is you keep your arm muscles as relaxed as possible before clamping your hand shut. Try to keep your arms down and close to your body when kicking as you have to tense unnecessary muscles to keep your arms held up. As you tense one lot of muscles others tend to follow so the more you can relax the unnecessary ones the more fluid you will become in the ones you are using. Try to use arms and legs with the same feeling that you have when you are throwing a stone and only think about tensing up at the very last instant.

Welcome Back
I hope that everyone had a great summer vacation. I am looking forward to getting the club back to full strength. Training will continue to be held twice weekly on Monday and Saturday until numbers warrant a return to Friday night training. Over the summer we have been holding joint training sessions with students from Sensei Griffith’s club. I’d like to thank Sensei Griffiths for his involvement and I welcome his students to attend any future training sessions at Burleigh.
Isaka Course
Sensei Isaka (8th Dan) is on a visit from Japan. Sensei Isaka is one of the most senior instructors from the JKA. The karate message boards have been buzzing in anticipation of this course, which is being held on Sat & Sun 8th/9th Sept in North Wales. I am thinking of attending on the Sunday. If anyone is interested in travelling up with me early on Sunday I have places available in the car. Cost for 4 hours training is £20 (under 16) £25 (over 16)
New Mats
The club has recently acquired 35 new interlocking tatami style mats. This will allow us to cover most of the floor area of the dojo, providing us with opportunity to practice take-downs and grappling moves in greater safety.
Licence Renewal
I remind members of the club that they must hold a current licence for the WTKF and WKGB. I have already sent off payment for replacement and need reimbursement of £15 ASAP off the following people. Training At Spytty
I have arranged for some senior students to attend training with Dave Griffiths on a Thursday evening every other week. I try to train with Dave whenever I get the opportunity. If any other club member would like to attend these sessions please let me know. I can also provide transport from Burleigh as long as I know in advance who needs a lift. Pickup will be 7:00pm and return by 9:30pm at the latest.
Training Tip
As I visit clubs and attend courses around the UK I am aware of how many people seem to coast through the lessons not really pushing themselves to higher standards. One very simple way to train harder is to try and stay in a low, deep stance at all times. Try to ignore the discomfort and continue to check foot alignment and front knee position. The accumulative effect of doing this will be to strengthen the muscles of the legs specifically for the performance of karate technique. The result will be that your endurance will increase meaning that you can perform more repetitions before fatigue sets in. You should also notice your karate becoming more dynamic and powerful. If you make this part of your class attitude you will be one step ahead of the majority of students.

Training Continues Over Summer
Contrary to the notice I made at the club I have decided to offer limited training during the summer holidays rather than close completely. The reasons for this decision are that I have had several requests from members who wish to have this facility, having already taken their summer holidays. In previous years attendance did not warrant keeping the club open. I had also planned to go away myself but have decided against this. The club will be open on Monday from 6:30 – 8:00pm as per usual. However I will not be holding a Saturday class. These changes will apply until 1st of September when we shall resume with the regular schedule. I apologise for changing things about and hope I have not inconvenienced anyone. I also hope that as many students as possible will take the opportunity to train throughout the summer.
Grading Arrangements
I am aware that many students are anxious to be graded as a mark of their progression and I want to assure everyone that I am doing all in my power to resolve this issue. I have contacted Mr. Gwyn Mowll (Head of WTKF) and Mr. Kenny Taylor (Head of UKTKF) in an attempt to arrange a date with Sensei Kawasoe for late September or October. I have also written to Mr. Kawasoe directly asking for a date at his earliest convenience. Mr. Kawasoe has been out of the country for the last few months and it has not been possible to contact him. Mr. Kawasoe is one of the world’s top instructors and as such is constantly in demand. Together with the WTKF we are trying hard to book him a full year in advance so that this situation does not reoccur. I thank you for your patience and I will announce the date as soon as I have it.
Training Fees
As I think most of you are aware I run the club as a full-time professional and the training fees I collect are my only source of income. From the little that comes in I have considerable expenses, the main one being the cost of hall hire, payment of which is due on the first week of the month. It therefore creates some financial difficulty for me if payments arrive late or people decide to pay less than the required monthly fee. I apologise if this does not apply to you personally.
If I might once again clarify the situation regarding payments. The costs are currently £20 per month for once-weekly training and £32 for twice-weekly payable at the first training session attended in the month.
Regarding monthly payments a few people are now asking to pay only for the days they attend. I have always made it clear that I will not charge for absence such as holidays or illness providing I am informed at the time of payment. I am also quite flexible about allowing students to train on an alternate day or even additionally in the week to make up for missed lessons. However I cannot afford to operate the club on a basis where people only train once or twice in a month and then feel that they can pay just for the days they attended. The onus must be that students commit to paying in full and then make their own decision about whether to train on a particular night or not. To do otherwise would mean operating my club at a loss and the possible risk of closure. I hope you understand the situation I am in and I express my appreciation for your cooperation in this matter.
Club Events
It has always been my goal to offer students the opportunity to develop their karate to the highest standard that their ability allows. To this end I regularly post information regarding courses and competitive events that I deem suitable for club members to attend. Although I do not expect every student to attend every event I would like to think that there is something that everyone could get involved in and I would encourage people to try and attend courses with highly qualified instructors like Dave Hazzard as such people provide levels of instruction that offer a deeper insight and different perspective into the art. I have asked Sensei Dave Griffiths (5th Dan) to hold a few sessions on Monday over the summer at no extra cost. I would also encourage students who are of a competitive nature to take part in the competitions that are held regularly in Cardiff. These events are professionally run and adhere to strict age and grade categories ensuring that no one is outclassed, humiliated or seriously hurt. Each time I attend I can’t help but feel that many of our students could achieve success as we have many that equal or indeed exceed the standard that I see on the day. The next such event is the Welsh Junior Championships on 5th August at the Welsh Institute Of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Communication Issues
I am finding that since sending out information via the website people seem less aware of what is happening regarding matters at the club. I had hoped to increase communication by offering this facility but it requires that both parents and members make a point of visiting the site at the start of each month. Kickathon Success
Many thanks to everyone who helped out with last months charity event. On the day the dozen of us that took part managed to complete more than 15,000 kicks in the allocated 60 minutes. I was delighted by the amount individuals managed to collect, with several people managing to get more than £50 in sponsorship. In total we raised over £400 to give to Nicky Isaac as part of the Race For Life Appeal. We had a small feature in the Argus Newspaper and Nicky sent a thank you card, which I’ve put on the club notice board.
Vale Karate Club Kata Competition
I have been contacted by Vale Karate Club who are holding a one-day kata competition on Sunday 1st July. This is an excellent opportunity to take part in a small scale competition giving you some experience prior to taking part in the larger tournaments like the WKGB Championships.
The competition is for children under 14, in the following categories:

Ideally I would like as many as possible to take part on the day. This event is taking place at Barry Comprehensive School, on the other side of Cardiff. We can arrange transport from Burleigh if you don’t have any of your own. The entry fee is £5 and there are medals for 1st 2nd and 3rd in each category. Maindee Festival Demonstration
I have been asked to do a demonstration as part of Maindee Festival on Saturday July 7th. Those that want to take part need to be at Maindee Rugby Club by 11:45am to take part in the opening parade at 12 O’clock. After that you will be allowed free entry into the festival. We shall do a 30-minute demonstration at 1:30pm. Please sign-up on the notice board if you want to take part.
Sports Council Open Day Demonstration
Due to the fact that I shall be attending a course with Sensei Dave Hazard on the 14th/15th July I have decided not to attend this event.

I had the pleasure of training with Dave Hazard about 6 months ago. He is a very experienced instructor who delivers courses of the highest standard. Karate Summer School
If you wish to attend Summer School from 30th July to Aug 3rd please note that I need your name and deposit of £30 by the end of this month. This event will only take place if I have a minimum of 10 students.
Welsh Open Junior Championships
I have placed separate details of this tournament on the club notice board. It takes place on Sunday 5th August at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and is open for all to attend. I need to know immediately if you intend to take part as I will delay going on holiday to act as team manager.
Licence Application
If you do not have a current WKGB/WTKF licence you will need to apply for one before the summer so that I can send off your application prior to the grading exam in October. It takes 4 – 6 weeks to process your application and there will not be time when we return in Sept. See me for an application form ASAP.
Community Chest Fund Award
The Sports Council for Wales has awarded BSKC with a grant for £1000 for the purpose of developing facilities and instructor qualification. I have decided that these funds will be spent on purchasing matting allowing us to do more ground work, grappling etc. The remainder will be spent so that Mark and Chris can renew their first aid qualifications and Mark can take the WKGB Level II Coaching Award.
Summer Closure
In the past I have kept the club open for the summer despite the small number of people who usually attend. As I am taking a holiday this year the club will be closed from 1st August and reopen on Monday 3rd September.

June 2007 Newsletter
Kickathon
I would like to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research. Please support this event by getting as much sponsorship as you can and by participating on Saturday June 2nd. I would like to achieve a total of 10,000 kicks from the club as a whole. The more people that take part the more achievable this goal becomes. The South Wales Argus have agreed to report the event on the day.
Karate Summer School
I need to know ASAP if you want to attend Karate Summer school from 30 July to 3rd August. To reserve your place please submit a deposit of £30 by the end of this month. I need a minimum of 10 people to make this viable. If I do not get sufficient numbers I will refund your deposit in full. Summer school will involve morning martial arts training 10am – 12pm combined with fun afternoon activities 1:00 – 3:00pm, such as swimming, movie matinee, baseball etc. Lunch and refreshments are also provided, total cost £65.
July Grading Postponed
It is with regret that I inform you that the grading examination originally intended for July has been postponed until October. The reasons are that it has not been possible to arrange a date with Sensei Kawasoe despite numerous efforts on my behalf. In addition quite a few members of the club require extra time to raise their standards. This decision, whilst regrettable takes some of the pressure off students and me also and ensures that everyone will be better prepared on the day of the exam.
Friday Night Training Suspended
I am sorry to inform members that until further notice there will be no class on Friday. This is due to the fact that I have been struggling to get more than a handful of people to attend this training session for several months.
Payment Reminder
All members and parents are reminded that payment for training sessions must be made on the first training session attended each month. Payment should be for the full amount unless I am told in advance that lessons will be missed due to holidays or some other legitimate excuse. It is not an option to pay for just the sessions attended as I have a heavy financial commitment regarding hall fees etc. The onus must be on members to pay in full and then fulfill their obligation to attend. If you need to swap dates within the month to get your full allocation I am happy to oblige but taking days off for personal reasons must be at ones own expense as financially I cannot afford to operate the club any other way. If the club is closed for any period such as at Xmas and Easter I will reduce the monthly fee proportionally to take account of this Unless specifically mentioned in the Monthly Newsletter we remain open for all Half-Term and Bank Holidays.
